Re: Build 10158 Released

BTW, if you notice when updating that after a while the download appears stuck at 0%, restart and try again. You'll likely see a message on Windows Update that updates failed to install and "fbl_impressive Professional 10159 - Error 0x4001e". Just click try again and it should start downloading. Myself and a couple others had the same thing happen.

Re: Build 10158 Released

Thanks for this information Corrine! :) I still have the previous build so I'm going to see if I can update right away. I think I reached a couple of deadlock states when using build 10130 with chrome.exe

Builds Suspended Until 7/29 Release!

Update to last week's blog post at Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10166 | Blogging Windows by Gabe Aul today:

Update 7/13: We’re only a couple of weeks away now from our public release of Windows 10, and we’re preparing for the world to begin the upgrade process. Windows Insiders have been the first to see our work on Windows 10 at every stage. Now you will also be the first to get a build flighted to you using the channels that we’ll use for targeting and deploying to PCs for our staged rollout.

We’re suspending the availability of Windows 10 builds briefly while we prepare for that, and the next build that we flight to you will be delivered using the production channels. Starting tomorrow, we will also not be delivering any additional ISOs at this point as we really need Insiders to be using, stressing, and validating our distribution and upgrade processes. We’ll make ISOs available again in the future, but for now we ask you to upgrade your current build via Windows Update once the next build is released.
Specifically, this means that in the next 24hrs:

  • Builds 10162 and 10166 will no longer be offered over Windows Update, and whatever build you’re on will show as “up to date” if you check for new builds.
  • ISOs for build 10162 will be taken down from the Home page - Windows Insider Program site and prerelease keys will no longer activate builds.
Once we have a new build available we’ll let you know through here with a blog post, Insider Hub, and on Twitter.
We’re very close to our public release and we’re working very hard to get everything just right. Please continue to send us problem reports using the Windows Feedback app for any problems that you encounter.

I think this Windows 10 release is coming too soon to be honest, so it should be interesting... They didn't completely change things around so the development time must have been a lot shorter planned this time, but I've been having some weird issues with the current 10166 build lately. Much better than the last (10158 I think...) but not perfect yet. A couple of the very few bluescreens (DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION) with this build during the logon screen -- sometimes I experience lag if I become too hasty with hitting a key as soon as the background image appears so the image slides up to get me to where it will prompt me for my account password -- the system hangs / locks up, and crashes.

Yeah, there's a lot of bugs at the moment. Nevertheless, I'm excited.

Pretty sure that there's still going to be a couple of issues once it gets released on July 29th, but I guess Microsoft is also fully aware of it and will be ready to deploy patches and fixes when needed. I'll still upgrade on the 29th and experience the same issues as everyone else just so I can give support on the forums and say that I'm in the same boat :P

I've noticed quite a few people (me included) have had problems once they've gone to Build 10240 with Outlook 2010/2013 no longer able to send emails (unable to connect to network)
it would appear that the update has corrupted some files. The fix is to run sfc /scannow which finds errors it can't fix but on restart outlook works again. I've looked on here but couldn't find the solution.

Build 10525 has been released to the Fast Ring. Although there are issues with the build, one of the most requested changes is the option to change the default color for Start, Acton Center, Taskbar, and Title bars. Although an early release of the feature is available in build 10525 by toggling Settings > Personalization > Colors. Another feature improvement is Memory Management. Read about the changes in Gabe Aul's post at Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10525 | Blogging Windows.

Build 10532 Released

  • Known Issues
  • Windows Hello face sign-on will not work on this build with some devices; the device can still be unlocked with other methods like pin, password, or fingerprint.
  • As reported by Insiders on the build 10525, 64 bit Google Chrome will crash on launch. Google is aware of the issue. In the meantime their 64 bit Google Chrome Canary build or 32 bit Google Chrome will work on this build.

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10565 released to the Fast Ring.

Aside from changes to Skype, messaging, Tab preview in Microsoft Edge, etc., based on problems people have been having, a major change in this build is device activation improvements:
We have received a lot of feedback from Insiders on making it easier to activate Windows 10 on devices that take advantage of the free upgrade offer to genuine Windows by using existing Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 product keys. If you install this build of the Windows 10 Insider Preview on a PC and it doesn’t automatically activate, you can enter the product key from Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 used to activate the prior Windows version on the same device to activate Windows 10 by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation and selecting Change Product Key. If you do a clean install of Windows 10 by booting off the media, you can also enter the product key from prior Windows versions on qualifying devices during setup. Refer to the Insider Hub for more information on these activation improvements including requirements.

Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10576 released to the Fast Ring. New features, changes and known issues are available at Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10576. In particular, attention should be paid to the following specific known issues:

  • After upgrading to this build, all your Skype messages and contacts are gone in the Messaging app. The workaround for this is to navigate to this folder in File Explorer:
    • C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Packages\
      Microsoft.Messaging_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache
    • Delete or rename the “PrivateTransportId” file.
    • Then restart the Messaging app.
  • Small form-factor devices, like the Dell Venue 8 Pro, that boot with rotation or virtual mode screen size set larger than the physical screen size will experience a bluescreen on upgrade and will roll back to the previous build.
  • After upgrading to this build, the power button on your Surface Pro 3 may no longer put your Surface Pro 3 to sleep and instead shut down.
