[SOLVED] Many windows update related issues

I'm running W7 ultimate SP1 on a Mac Pro (2008) under Bootcamp, using the latest version from Mountain Lion. However, Bootcamp is not the issue; it actually started when I couldn't reinstall Zune--for an unknown reason--to deal with my Windows Phone, and I tried many, probably bad, solutions before posting to Microsoft, who could not help. I ended up using Zune on another computer to connect to the phone and returned to repair the damage.

Of course, I took such measures as checking all disks, deleting the Software distribution folder & repairing all .net versions possible up to 4.5

Meanwhile I have the following issues:
1) Windows update hangs looking for updates
2) Most fixits hang while loading (including Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64)
3) The few that did go through came back with "unable to fix problem", but no specific problem named.
4) When trying to run "Regsvr32 "C:\Windows\System32\wudriver.dll"" I got the message that it was loaded, but entry point not found
5) Same when trying qmgr.dll; other wu files & qmgrprxy.dll OK
6) So I tried sfc, but scannow stuck at 9% saying there were files that couldn't be repaired. Searched the log & couldn't find any reference to non-repairable files.

Please, help!

Re: Many windows update related issues. More info

This is an update to my "Many windows update related issues " post.

I ran sfc /verifyonly. It completed the analysis & stated that there were "integrity violations". Then I attempted /scannow, and it again stopped at 9%, once again citing corrupt files. The expanded CBS.log file (I didn't delete the old one) is attached. I also ran Fixit 50195 to reset IE without issue. I tried to run Fixit 50202 in aggressive mode, but it hung because the windows update service stuck in the "stopping" mode. I only know how to fix this by rebooting (or maybe logging off), but retrying Fixit 50202 once again causes the update service to hang.

I ran the FixWU utility from TheWindowsClub. It completed without problems the second time I ran it.

I ran the old MGADiag, and the output is attached.

Perhaps this helps.

Hello :)

I am so sorry I missed you first time around. It's been seriously hectic here! But...I've now put together the first fix.

WARNING: This fix has been created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do not follow these instructions as you may cause serious harm to your computer.

Download a copy of SFCFixScript.zip attached to this post, and save it to your Desktop.
Then download a copy of SFCFix.exe from here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/downloads/sfcfix/, and also save it to your Desktop.
Single click on SFCFixScript.zip and drag and drop it on top of SFCFix.exe. SFCFix will open and perform a fix for your corruptions.
A logfile called SFCFix.txt will open (and be saved to your Desktop). Please copy and paste the report into your next reply.

Once complete, please re-run sfc /scannow and let me know what % it gets to.

Onto this "2) Most fixits hang while loading (including Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64)"

How long did you leave Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64? It should hang at ~60% completion for up to an hour - that would be normal. Or did it not initialize at all? Please give it another try, leave it for an hour in the background, then cancel it if not done. Then please upload C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Thank you!

Richard

Thank you, Niemiro, for taking a look at my quandary. I have tried to comply with your response.

I applied the SFCFixScript & have attached the log file. When I again ran sfc /scannow, it stopped at exactly the same point (9%) as previously.

With regard to Windows6.1-KB947821-v27-x64, I ran it overnight, and it was hung up at exactly the same place the next morning as when I went to bed, so I have no log file to show from that fix.

Incidentally, I ran a boot scan using avast & noted some corrupted zip archives, but didn't see any other issues.

Finally, I reran sfc /verifyonly & have attached the CBS.log (having thrown away the old logs)

Hello :)

Can you please have another go at the SFCFix step & upload a new logfile. At this moment, it doesn't look right. On the third line, it currently says "Not using a script file.". It won't say that if it goes well.

So, do you mind having one more try at dropping SFCFixScript.zip on top of SFCFix.exe, and see if the logfile looks good this time (and upload it if it does?)

Thank you!

Richard

Richard: I tried 4 times, but every time it gave the same "Not using a script file message".

Meanwhile, in looking at the CBS log from verifyonly, I see about 4 corrupt file messages. Some of these refer to the UMDF folder in the drivers folder of System32. I remember fiddling with that folder while trying to fix my Zune problem. Is it possible that I have some files missing from the file repository? I took ownership & deleted some both related to Zune & to the Creative X-fi card that I uninstalled.

Hmmmm. Can you please zip up & upload that new CBS folder?

Thanks.

Richard: I wanted to repeat that when I ran sfc /verifyonly, I found four instances of the word "corrupt". In each case it was a dll file missing from the file repository. The four dll's were (without upper case letters): imageres.dll, usbdr.dll, wpdmtpdr.dll, & wudfusbcciddriver.dll. I suspect this issue occurred when I completely uninstalled the SoundBlaster x-Fi Platinum card & all associated software.

I don't know if this helps, but I thought to give it a try.

Re: Many windows update related issues: ALL ISSUES SOLVED

Microsoft :cool3: came to the rescue. I have W7, but my installation DVD was outdated & pre-SP1.

The resolution is easy:
1) I went to: Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Center, where I
could download a new bootable image of W7 with SP1.
2) I burned a new DVD using ImgBurn; no need to worry about "bootable"; the image is bootable.
3) I opened the newly burnt DVD and selected setup.
4) I was then given the opportunity to upgrade (Microsoft tells you not to use the Advanced option). I chose the Upgrade option.
5) That was it: an inventory of my whole OS, apps & user profiles was taken & a new OS installed in its place. Two hours later my computer returned to me after I entered my key & activated online. Almost all applications were 'unaware' of the change (except Thunderbird, but it's only a small issue caused by an IMAP account).
When I checked for updates, I found 128 updates at over 400MB:eek: and almost 2 hours to install. I then ran WU twice more until it had cleared out all residual updates.
The computer now boots faster & has no 'hiccups' that I've found. This was like going to a spa & getting a complete clean-out. I recommend it for everyone at least
once a week!

That is awesome news! Thank you for letting me know, and I wish you a good day :)

Richard
