Hi

I have a problem with my laptop running Windows 8.1 64-bit, specifically I cannot get it to install update kb2894853. It keeps prompting me to update but whenever I try it the installation fails, citing error 80073712. Since this error started appearing, I have been able to install other updates normally (so far), but this one keeps failing.

I tried following the suggested actions for this error code from MS Support (running the Windows Update Troubleshooter, an SFC scan and the DISM tool), none of which seemed to help. The Windows Update Troubleshooter reports that missing or corrupt files were detected and that problems installing recent updates were not fixed. I've attached the CBS log with the post, I really don't know what else to try at this point, I'd be really greatful if someone could help me out on this one.

Thanks!

Matt

Hello Matt, and welcome to Sysnative!

Unfortunately, your error code is not a good sign :(

I'll definitely check for sure though, rather than take a guess just off the error code, so please follow these instructions:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

 1. [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload]and save this to your Desktop.
 2. Download the attached file, SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
 3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
 4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
 5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
 6. SFCFix will now process the script.
 7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
 8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

I'll explain the situation fully in my next post to you (I'm up to my eyes in work tonight), but basically, most error codes mean that there is some sort of corruption somewhere. This is usually fixable. Your error code means that the entire COMPONENTS hive is corrupt (equivalent of ~10,000 corruptions), which is not usually possible to fix (occasionally it is possible, but only rarely).

Hi Matt,

until today I had the same problem. The fix for me was to run sfc /scannow (telling me it fixed some corrupt files and some not), then Windows Update could finally install KB2894853.

Now, in my CBS.log I have the line "TiWorker: Client requests SFP repair object." at exactly the time I ran the sfc command, but which I didn't find in your CBS.log

Just to be sure: could you please try again sfc /scannow in a Command Prompt with Administrator Privileges and verify if this line is there?

I did this both on my main Win8.1 machine and a Win8.1 in a VM (both had this problem).

Hi, it's been a month, I had loads of work and had completely forgotten about this, but I'm hoping I might still be able to get some help. Richard, I saw you posted a new sticky thread about this very issue, I hope you don't mind me posting my COMPONENTS hive here instead of opening a new thread.

Here's the link to it: http://1drv.ms/QymOXm

Thanks again for all your help!

Matt
