I downloaded the fixing tool from here please can anyone help me as a non techie on Windows 8?

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative!

What problem are you currently experiencing? Was your SFC reporting corruptions? Please re-scan with sfc /scannow and see if that problem is resolved. If there is a second problem, please let me know :)
