HP really wants people to buy a Windows 7 PC instead of a Windows 8 machine. The PC maker has been emailing customers over the weekend noting that "Windows 7 is back." A new promotion, designed to entice people to select Windows 7 over Windows 8 with $150 of "savings," has launched on HP’s website with a "back by popular demand" slogan. The move is clearly designed to position Windows 7 over Microsoft’s touch-centric Windows 8 operating system.

Repeat after me: An advertising slogan is not news.

A few tech journalists need to be reminded of that rule today, after piling on to the story that HP is bringing Windows 7 back “by popular demand.” The proof? This bit of selling copy on the landing page at HP’s Home and Home Office site...

You can see the image at the source but it reads, "Back by popular demand".

As Ed points out, "Windows 7 models have routinely been featured at HP.com since the release of Windows 8."

Besides, there has been no end of sales date set yet for Windows 7 and there won't be until at least October of this year: Windows lifecycle fact sheet - Microsoft Windows Help. That said, I like Windows 7 a lot, however, if someone is looking for a new computer and gets a touch-enabled machine, they'd be better off with Windows 8.1.

Ed followed up with a second article about the availability of Windows 7 in which he included the following advice:

Personally, if I were going to buy a Windows 7 PC today I would look for one that includes a Windows 8 Pro license and has been downgraded to Windows 7 Pro by the OEM. That configuration gives you the flexibility to upgrade to Windows 8.1 (or, presumably, 8.2 or 8.3, if those versions arrive in the next year or two) for free. If you buy a PC with a Windows 7 license and decide later that you want to upgrade, you'll have to pay dearly for the privilege.
