Looks like we'll need the components hive.

Zip and upload the file C:\Windows\System32\Config\Components to OneDrive and include the link. It should be about 12MB zipped.

Thank you for taking this on. I'll pass along the instructions.

They had problems getting the log because they kept getting a message that the file was in use. After I had them end the Windows Update Service, they were able to zip the folder.

Microsoft services

Sorry about that, I should give better instructions :)

The linked file appears to just contain the logs.

Let's try this:

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter

    copy %systemroot%\system32\config\components %userprofile%\desktop\

  4. Right click on the Components file on your Desktop and select Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  5. Upload the Components.zip file from your Desktop to a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link with your reply.

If you get an error message such as ACCESS DENIED reboot your computer and try again.

They were unsuccessful following these or the supplemental instructions you provided me for them. They took it to a local repair shop and the diagnosis was that McAfee had completely corrupted the OS. The person at the repair shop said they have had several instances of McAfee corrupting Windows on HPs.
