This is a friends laptop so I hope not to have to reinstall Win 7.

I don 't have a X86 version of Windows 7 to try to get the files/folders from.

Hello :)

WARNING: This fix has been created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do not follow these instructions as you may cause serious harm to your computer.

Download a copy of SFCFixScript.zip attached to this post, and save it to your Desktop.
Then download a copy of SFCFix.exe from here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/downloads/sfcfix/, and also save it to your Desktop.
Single click on SFCFixScript.zip and drag and drop it on top of SFCFix.exe. SFCFix will open and perform a fix which should take no more than a few seconds to complete.
A logfile called SFCFix.txt will open (and be saved to your Desktop). Please copy and paste the report into your next reply.

Thank you!

Richard

Thanks Richard. I was over-ridden. I ended up doing a restore to factory late this afternoon, before I saw your post.

I'm sorry to have wasted your time on this, I really thought the owner wanted to fix the problem rather than start over. After the restore I was able to install 136 updates, including SP1 with no problem.

Bill, I did run through all the different fix scenarios before I posted here. Thank you though.

Don't worry about it! I didn't take half a second to generate that fix. After all, a tool created the fix for me, and I used a canned speech. Literally 20 seconds :p

Anyway, I'm really glad that everything's working now :)

Richard

P.S. Even the script isn't personalised anymore:

Code:
::
{ARCHIVE} %SystemRoot%\winsxs [DIR]

Although how it's done in the upcoming version of SFCFix due in a couple of weeks will be very different.
