Error - 0x80072f8f while updating

Well since couple of months back i have the problem that i get this error each time i try 2 upgrade Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows update...
However the automatic update or MSE seems 2 work...

With the appearance of this Error couple of other things started failing:
-Remotedesktop became impossible.
-Shockwave Flash started crushing every 10 minutes >> Had to change back to a very very old version
-Changing the windows functions became impossible

I tried several things:
-synchonisation with windows time like explained in this video, which i did, but it made no difference.

-I have no problem accessing https://www.microsoft.com, so it cant be a "certificate authorities" Problem like i read couple of times.

Let's start off with this:

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    net start w32time
    w32tm /resync

  4. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  5. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.

No problem, my German is a little rusty but I can just about work out what that means.

Can you recreate your license store as well please:

1) Click Start button.
2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) Type: net stop sppsvc (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection service may not be running, this is ok.
5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
8) Type: net start sppsvc
9) Type: slui.exe
10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key or Activation may occur automatically.

1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then locate the Security section.
4. Click to clear the Check for server certificate revocation check box, and then click OK.
5. Restart the computer.

Now try to update :)

But this is impossible, i am using a Windows version my Dad bought, i am going to talk to him now...
 
Windows update again:


I talked to my Dad and he has the "Product Key", which he will give me the next time we meet. I just dont get why Windows now tells me that this Product key is illegal, when I was using this "key" for the last 2 years.... And I only started having update problems and other problems (like i explained in the beginning) couple of months back!

Any idea now?

Hi Josef,

Sorry, I should have made the instructions clearer. It was one of the steps that we took that made Windows think it was no longer genuine:

Sorry to inconvenience you, but it was a necessary step to take to troubleshoot this :) Whilst we wait for your product key, I would like you to run an SFC scan please:

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Sorry - for some reason I only just got/found the request! :(

The Activation request is a Sockets error -
What AV are you using?? What other AV's have ever been installed?

Try opening an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

you'll be advised to reboot - do so, and try again.
