I'm experiencing the following crash every now and then. I open a folder, and in about 1-2 minutes there's this crash.

I uploaded the dump of explorer.exe, taken with the crash message on the screen, to https://www.mediafire.com/file/iev2mf9c9mxwa75 (43MB)

Hi there, and welcome to Sysnative :)

I don't see anything completely conclusive in the dump file. There are references to an unknown module, quite why it is unknown is not clear to me. It is furthermore not clear if this is just memory corruption/a red herring or a genuine lead.

Either way here are my suggestions:

1) Please install all of the following hotfixes from Microsoft:
Applications may crash in Windows Vista, in Windows 7, in Windows Server 2008 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows Explorer may crash randomly when the network discovery state is set to On in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows Explorer crashes randomly in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

2) I see inconclusive references to the DropBox Extension in your dump file. I suggest you temporarily remove the DropBox program from your computer for troubleshooting purposes: How to uninstall Dropbox – Dropbox Help

3) Upload another dump file from a Windows Explorer crash without DropBox installed and we'll see what that looks like.

All the best,

Richard

Thanks, it's fixed. I started checking for these fixes, and one of them said that it overridden by a later service pack. Then I ran windows update, which discovered quite a few dozen updates, and I allowed them to go ahead. After that, the issue clearly has decreased, i.e. I was no longer able to open a folder and have an assured crash in 2 minutes; but still I saw it 2-3 times during the next 2 days. So I went ahead and uninstalled Dropbox. Since then, not one crash.

The updates have fixed another mystery that was going on on this computer: when I clicked on the icon representing %userprofile% on the desktop, nothing happened. Same if I manually created a shortcut to my user profile. So it looks like there was some deep entrenched problem, and now it's gone (knock on wood).

Thanks a lot!
