Hi.

After recent up dates I keep getting. "the program can't check for definition updates error code 0x8007007e" on windows defender.
The window updates loaded fine and I have checked for virus (clean) I even tried the microsoft tech guys who want to charge for sorting it out. Can anyone help please as its starting to slow my comp down. I am on windows vista home premium 32bit.
Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Interestingly enough there has been a update today but it has not corrected the problem. This looks to be another of Microsoft update **** ups!!!

"Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.197.474.0)

Installation date: ‎24/‎04/‎2015 15:21

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Important

Install this update to revise the definition files used to detect spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed."

Anyone else getting this problem?

Edit 2: More updates arrived along with download for Microsoft security essentials.
Hotfix for Windows (KB981889)

Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.197.496.0)

Installation status: Successful

Update type: Optional

Install this update to revise the definition files that are used to detect viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

After running a command prompt sfc/scannow I get.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WinDir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log.

Details of the System File Checker process are. (but i do not know how to correct it and i did not get a disk with this comp. Any help please.)

Hi, Oneman.

With Microsoft Security Essentials installed, Windows Defender is disabled because the engine is included in Microsoft Security Essentials.

I am on windows vista home premium 32bit.
Then the Windows Defender is the older Windows Defender - that is, just the anti-spyware version. If you have Microsoft Security Essentials installed Windows Defender should be disabled because MSE includes anti-spyware code as well as anti-malware.

Do you have MSE installed? If not, what antimalware program are you using?

So I suggest you Turn off Windows Defender and reboot and see what happens.

You have to watch out for Corrine. She's quick and will sneak in there with the answer while you are typing. ;)

@donetao, the errors related to Windows Defender which should be disabled with Microsoft Security Essentials installed and MSE was successfully updated so let's wait until he returns to give us more information regarding what he was attempting to do with Windows Defender.

OK! You can check to see if windows defender is turned off. If you had a different anti-virus program before MSE, it may not be turned off.
Just a shot in the dark as it seems all your window updates have installed successfully. Not hard to check. You can find window dwfender in your control panel.

Thanks for the reply all.

The error code appeared after a windows update. I then faffed about trying to sort the problem out but the defender icon kept popping up each day in the bottom right tray (showing a ! over the icon.) I then let the tech guys have a look but they all wanted money. After looking on various sites I found the MSE and downloaded it. I no longer get the defender icon but when I try to update defender it has the error code and the scan was showing corrupt files. (got in a bit of a panic)

Good to know there is nothing to worry about and that the MSE overrides the defender. You would have thought that the tech guys (microsoft help) would have mentioned it!!! :mad7:
Thanks again for all your time and I will look into sorting the other corrupt file out. (I may need further help with that but I will read the above mentioned thread first.)

Kind regards.
Oneman.:thumbsup2:

Just out of interest why would the Program Files\Windows Defender be showing up as corrupted? It was fine before the windows update.:confused2:

I am confused now. Since you have installed MSE, you should not be trying to update Windows Defender anymore. MSE updates take care of all that.

Hi! I probably missed this some where. What operating system are you running. W8 calls it windows defender. Are you trying to install MSE on a W8 operating system. That would cause a conflict.
Windows 8 comes with Windows Defender, which has been improved in Windows 8 to provide the same level of malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials.
You do not need to install Microsoft Security Essentials and it will not work with Windows 8. Microsoft will continue to provide and improve Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. If you are upgrading to Windows 8, you should uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials first.

@donetao, Oneman is using Windows Vista.

Hi, Oneman.

Looking at the times in the log you posted, it appears that there had been an update for Windows Defender that had already been downloaded and was waiting to be installed. However, when you installed MSE as your replacement antivirus solution, it disabled Windows Defender and replaced Windows Defender. At 19:01:57 the additional updates, including MSE had already been completed at 15:56. Thus, the awaiting update to Windows Defender could not be installed.
Edit 2: More updates arrived along with download for Microsoft security essentials.
Hotfix for Windows (KB981889)

Installation date: ‎24/‎04/‎2015 15:56

Installation status: Successful

Now, take a look at the last line of the log:
2015-04-24 19:02:58, Info CSI 000001fc [SR] Verify and Repair Transaction completed. All files and registry keys listed in this transaction have been successfully repaired

The key question is whether or not your computer is working properly now. If so, all is well. If not, please let us know what is happening.

Hi Digerati.

The defender is now showing up as turned off but is requesting that to protect my comp I should turn it on! When I try the link to turn it on it brings up the error code.
I was getting the same code error when i tried to update defender before MSE. So i thought I still had the problem.

I only downloaded MSE as I thought it might be a fix to the error code (I tried a few different things.). I did not realise it was a whole different protection. I already have Avast in use and I have IObit malware down loaded but not in use along with various comp health and cleaners that I use quite often and have been for sometime without problems. It was only when I got the defender error that I started to panic.

Hi Oneman,

If you can upload your whole CBS folder, then myself or Go The Power may be able to have a look at the file corruptions and repair them. Contrary to the last line of the log, not everything was repaired.

SFCFix CBS Collection

  1. Download SFCFix.exe using the following link and save the tool to your Desktop: [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload]
  2. Download SFCFixScript.txt and save this to your Desktop as well: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u...ts/~Generic/Collect/CBS/SFCFixScript.txt?dl=1
  3. On your Desktop, you should now see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  4. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  5. SFCFix will now begin to upload your CBS logfiles to our server.

Yes Corrine.
All seems well now apart from it taking 72secs to start up. I thought the update for defender that came after the error might have been a patch to fix the error code but it made no difference. I now see why. You would have thought that they would disable the 'turn on' link in defender to stop any confusion.

Yes i will give that ago.

I did try the SFCfix and got this result. (just to add to my confusion)

It seems you ran SFCFix without dragging the script file onto it. Can you please try again, making sure to drag and drop the txt file onto the exe.

OK. Tekno Venus.

Forget the last result here is the new one.
