Hello gang, I have been pulling my hair out all weekend trying to troubleshoot the topic issue on a customers server and ran across this great forum in the process. I have done all the usual step of sfc scan, reset windows update components as well as other various "fixes" I have run across in my searches but am having no luck. Even when I try to download the stand alone package it will get to the very end of the install progress bar and give me an "update failed to install". I am hoping to recruit someone smarter than me to help with this issue :) I will be happy to provide any information you require and will certainly donate to the cause if we can get this resolved.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome!

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Hi!

It appears that you have done the ProcMon steps incorrectly.

No useful data was captured. Did you ensure it was indeed capturing once you started the process?

The problem with using the windows update to apply it is that it actually never errors out and stops, it just starts back over with the download again and keeps attempting over and over so im not sure when to stop the logging?

Let's clear the cache and then retry updates:

Restart Windows in Safe Mode w/networking.

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable

  • Extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • Execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, accept the Security warning and the EULA
  • Click the button Jump To Repairs
  • Click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:
    WindowsRepair.png
  • Click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the boxes
  • Check only the following boxes:
    • 16 - Repair Windows Updates
  • Check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System
  • Click the Start Repairs button
  • When the system reboots, attempt the update again.

No love. See attached pic, The failed update messages will just keep stacking up as long as I leave Windows update services turned on and it repeats the cycle all day and night

Thanks.

Step#1 - FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right-click FRST64.exe and click Run as Administrator to run it as administrator. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already checked).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please attach the log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also attach that along with the FRST.txt in your reply.

Thank you. It appears that Hyper V integration components are missing and are causing Windows Update failure. Is this a Hyper V host or a VM on another host?

Tried to reboot the host just for good measure and it hung up on shutting down the hyper-v services. I will jump back on in the morning after the customer hard boots it and update you.

Sorry, still no love. This is a server 2016 VM so the integration components are built in and all turned on and it still cycles non stop.

A screen recording software. I'm asking whether it would be possible for you to film the failure and send the video to me, so I can see first hand what is happening.
