Cannot 'verify' my PC

For some reason, I cannot verify my desktop PC. I have MS send me the code, and when I input the code (copy & paste), It tells me "That code didn't work. Check the code and try again."
Is there a time limit on the code? MS doesn't send it immediately. It can sometimes take an hour or so.

The code they send to my alternate email address never works for some reason.

Although for an email account rather than desktop PC, when requesting a verification code recently, it arrived within minutes. Of course, I did keep refreshing the page.

I've read that for some strange reason, some people have occasionally had a problem if the alternate email address is also a Microsoft address (hotmail, live, outlook, msn). If that is the case, how about logging in to the email address that corresponds to the Microsoft Account on your desktop PC and adding another alternate email address -- one that isn't on Microsoft servers? You'll receive a code at the other address and will need to use it to verify it at your Microsoft Account. Note: When copy/pasting the code, watch for preceding spaces. When you request a code for the desktop PC, it will be sent to both email addresses.

It worked, Corrine! My alternate email address was already a non-MS one, so I added a little-used GMail address, verified it, and then proceeded with the account verification. The code arrived immediately (Hmmmm....) and I copy & pasted it, and it was accepted. This I did on my Yoga 11. I will have to try it on my desktop next.
