I am working on someone's computer Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. It had a rogue antivirus that I cleaned up. When trying to install (SP1 mostly) updates it failed. I did some reading and found I am getting CBS registry errors. Can anyone help me? I'm trying to get this back to them today.

Hi Bob,

Try this:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Then re-run the SURT and post the CheckSUR.log again when complete please.

Export registry as hive

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file CBS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Zip up CBS and attach it to your next post please.

Hi Bob,

Can you redo the SFCFix instructions please and run the script again, then post the SFCFix log when complete? It doesn't seem to have gone through and without the log I have no way of telling what's gone wrong.

Tom

oops. forgot that one. doing too many things at once.

Code:
SFCFix version 2.1.0.0 by niemiro.Start time: 2014-01-29 23:06:08.073
Using .txt script file at C:\Users\Anthony\Desktop\SFCFix.txt

Successfully processed all directives.
SFCFix version 2.1.0.0 by niemiro has completed.
Currently storing 0 datablocks.
Finish time: 2014-01-29 23:06:08.075

Hello again :)

As you can probably see, nothing much happened there. That was because of a tiny error in the script file which I've corrected. Can you please re-run the instructions one more time, but this time using the script file attached to my post.

I'm sorry about this faff. Thank you for your continued patience,

Richard

i am also curious as to what exactly do these tools do to the registry? i looked around niemiro's blog and found some useful information but not much detail, unless i missed something. ive fixed hundreds of infected computers in my day and many had issues with windows update not working but i have never had any issue such as this. i am very curious because, as i have been fixing computers for about 15 years or so, it isnt very often that i come across something new.

ps: glad i found this place because most of the fixes given to these issues (including microsoft's always worthless help forums) was to do a repair install, which i knew was a copout, "we don't know so just reinstall", bs answer.

Hi Bob,

Sorry for the mistake in the last script!

i am also curious as to what exactly do these tools do to the registry? i looked around niemiro's blog and found some useful information but not much detail, unless i missed something. ive fixed hundreds of infected computers in my day and many had issues with windows update not working but i have never had any issue such as this. i am very curious because, as i have been fixing computers for about 15 years or so, it isnt very often that i come across something new.

For now, SFCFix doesn't do very much without an expert to analyse the logs and provide a script, but when we run this script it is simply importing the registry file and restoring the necessary permissions and ownership on the key. Here is the last portion of your fix:

Well, everything seems ok for now. Thanks for all the help. I watched the changes throughout so now I got a good idea how to resolve it myself should I ever come across this issue again. Thanks again.
