Hi guys. For the past few weeks I've been getting BSODs, primarily with the error DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I've recently installed a new USB wireless adapter, which I suspect might have something to do with it, but I could be wrong. I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, but the problem still happens. I've just tried to boot from an XP CD into the Recovery Console after the latest crash and it's even BSODing part-way through the boot from CD.

I've attached the results of jcgriff2's XP BSOD collector and my Speccy results. Please help!

Many thanks.

Problem Devices:

Code:
Device PNP_DEVICE_ID ERROR_CODE
SM Bus Controller PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0064&SUBSYS_80AD1043&REV_A2\3&267A616A&0&09	The drivers for this device are not installed.
Creative Live! Cam Vista IM	USB\VID_041E&PID_4052\5&33E27414&0&2 The drivers for this device are not installed.
Ethernet Controller PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0066&SUBSYS_80A71043&REV_A1\3&267A616A&0&20	The drivers for this device are not installed.

You do not have your chipset drivers installed (SM Bus Controller). That may be the root of the problem. Chipset drivers are extremely important, and especially so in Windows XP systems.

You should also install the drivers for the other two devices listed above.

Thanks for your response. I downloaded and installed the above drivers earlier and things seemed to be alright, but then a while later it BSOD'd again. It's weird because when you first turn the PC on it'll tend to work for 30-60 minutes, then BSOD, then upon rebooting it will BSOD every time after within a few minutes. It's as though once the PC is "warmed up" it starts to BSOD.

Hi baggies13,

Will you please attach the new dump files? (you can just run the collection app again)

Recommendations:

Latest crashes point to USB devices, so your USB wireless network device is a prime suspect. Try replacing it with an Ethernet cable to test or replace the USB wireless network device with a PCI wireless network adapter instead.

Outdated and Problematic Drivers:

The below devices appear to be part of a set of modem driver sets; they are likely not a problem.

I've just purchased and installed a new wireless USB adapter (different brand, model, etc.) and the same problem is still happening :( One thing that I did notice when I just booted for the first time after a crash is that the system clock had reset to 00:00:00 1st Jan 2001. It's not the first time that it's done this after a crash. It's crashed twice since installing the new adapter and I've posted a new set of log files post-crashing.

If someone could have a look at the most recent crashes and see if they can figure out what's wrong I'd be most grateful.

Many thanks.

Regarding the clock resetting to 2001, check the time in the computers BIOS. To access the BIOS, some good instructions can be found here: How to Enter Your PC's BIOS | PCWorld. Don't modify anything for now, just see if the time reported in the BIOS is the same as the actual time. If it is not, you may need to replace the CMOS battery. I'll describe how to do this if you do need to, although it's relatively simple.

Stephen
