BOSD after installing Adobe Reader update

Hi not sure this is the right way to do this please forgive any wrong doings as I am new here.
I am running Intel i3 CPU 4GB Ram win 7 64 bit
I recently did an update to adobe Reader which resulted in screwing up my Symantec endpoint small business Antivirus causing the BSOD.
The only way I could get my pc going again was in safe mode. I downloaded Symantec cleanwipe and ran it. It took care of the BSOD but appears to have corrupted some files . Next I ran sfc /scannow
and found there were some files that could not be fixed and now i was hoping you could some how make heads or tales of the CBS.LOG file and help fix my PC.

Re: BOSD after installing Adobe Reader update

Hello Topogijo, and welcome to Sysnative :)

I am quite suspicious of cause and effect here, actually. The corrupt file detected by SFC is C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe, a part of Windows Defender.

I cannot be sure, but I am suspicious of the fact that Symmantec and Windows Defender both break at the same time, and you get BSODs.

I can help you to repair Windows Defender, but I do wonder whether you are infected, and that is what is causing all this. Maybe, maybe not.

Anyway, can you please follow the instructions here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...g-instructions-windows-8-7-windows-vista.html

and post the information in a new post here. We will then take a look.

Thank you!

Richard

Hello again :)

Thank you very much for posting that. Someone will be along shortly to help you further.

Recommendations:

The system in question is a bit of a mess. At the time of your crash, you had an old Norton program from 2009 running on the system, which accounts for at least a few of your crashes. How did you remove Norton to install avast!?

Did you use the Norton removal tool?

Software Concerns:

You have Windows repair software from tweaking.com which I would strongly advise against running or even installing on your system. You also have a program called Registry Clean Expert installed. Registry cleaning is not recommended and often damages Windows beyond repair over time, which can result in the need for a clean install of Windows to get it working right again.

You have DriverMax installed; I do not recommend 3rd party driver updating utilities. Drivers should be updated from the manufacturer for devices that were bought separate from your motherboard, or from the motherboard support site. Using 3rd party driver update utilities can lead to installing buggy drivers or drivers that do not match your specific hardware.

Device Concerns:

Code:
USB Mass Storage Device	USB\VID_03F0&PID_C602&MI_02\6&168709F2&1&0002	This device cannot start.

Have you taken any measures to get the above device to start?

What USB external hard drives or flash drives are you using on the system?

Outdated and Problematic Drivers:

You should update/replace/remove the following drivers. Any drivers that are known to cause BSODs, please remove the software or remove the drivers and then remove the device; steps to do so are given after the list of outdated drivers.

To update drivers, make sure to download the drivers from the manufacturer and not using 3rd party programs. Your drivers should be found from your motherboard support site (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) or your vendor support site (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc.) first. If you have devices you bought yourself, the drivers for those devices need to be downloaded from the manufacturer support site for those devices. If you need help, let us know.

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.

3rd Party Drivers:

The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

Hi thank you for your help, I used nortons cleanwipe in safe mode because it was the only way I was able to remove it. After using your recommendations I still cannot install nortons it seems that I can only install avast so I am still having issues. I repaired the usb mass storage device, updated Arcsoft, conexant,Realtek drivers. I uninstalled Symantec,Logitech web cam. I am not sure about Gigabyte Easy saver as it wants me to update my bios and I was sure it was a good idea with the trouble I am having. as for JRaid.sys i didn't know which driver to update there was 4 folders, 1394,card reader, ethernet, sata control. Is there anything else you want me to do or any further scans you would like.

Did problems begin before or after you installed your optimization / registry cleaning software?

If they began after, can you find a restore point to restore to that was prior to you using that software?

I do not see too many drivers available for your motherboard that support Windows 7. I would recommend removing the Gigabyte Easy Saver software from the system (after doing the system restore mentioned above if you are able to).

Also (again after the system restore), here is a link to updates for your JMICRON device.

The rest of the drivers are not imperative to update. Norton, Gigabyte Easy Saver, and the JMICRON drivers are my three primary concerns on your system.

Hi again I have removed Nortons and updated JMIcron drivers but as for system restore they do not go back far enough to restore pryer to install of that software. Is there a scan I can do to see if my pc is clean and up to date now.???

Norton has been completely removed. Nice work! :-}

I still see the Registry Clean Expert and tweaking.com software installed. I would feel better if they were removed.

The JRAID version is 1.17.49.4 and does not appear to be updated. Check the modification date of jraid.sys by browsing your computer to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\jraid.sys and let us know what date is shown for Date Modified.

I am sorry I did uninstall both programs through the software uninstaller but for some reason they both show up in add remove programs when I got to remove the them Registry clean expert says it does not exist the other Tweak .com says invalid uninstall control file. it say 08/29/2009 I will try to update again.

I tried to run the update for JRAID through the link you sent and it doesn't appear to want to update. The installer window flashes up but then nothing happens???

For the registry cleaners, any cleaning you have done using them probably corrupted their installations making it difficult to remove them. We may be getting close to the need for a clean install of Windows to fix the problems at hand.

Did you run the JRAID installer program with elevated privileges?

  1. Right click the JMicron Setup.exe file.

  2. Click Run as administrator

Well I am hoping not to have to do a clean install. yes i did try to update driver in administrator mode sti8ll nothing so I tried R1.17.63.01 and I get a pop up box stating no JMicron JMB36x scsi adapter found.

no nothing like that what I do have is a yellow caution sign under PORTABLE DEVICES
[h=1]WPD FileSystem Volume Driver[/h]and under the properties tab I get this message

(Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

It really sounds like your registry has been damaged beyond repair from the software you were using to "clean" it. I still strongly advise a clean install. If you are still reluctant, you could try an in-place upgrade install (repair install) of Windows. The in-place upgrade will keep your programs and user files intact and just replace Windows components.

If your programs were also damaged within the registry, though, an upgrade install will still require those programs to be re-installed. The upgrade install is not guaranteed to fix all registry related problems, whereas the clean install would be.
