Black screen of death?

The past week my win 7 laptop just gives me a black screen and I then have to cold boot it. After 1 or 2 times of doing that it does eventually boot up into win 7. After researching fixes for this none have worked. I have run sfc/scannow and it came up w this message: windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Did look at the cbs.log file but do not know how to read it. Can you help?

Please upload the .CBS log file, and have you tried running the SFC /SCANNOW command three separate times with reboots in between each scan?

For the CBS log file that x BlueRobot is talking about, please refer to these instructions - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html

@X BlueRobot - Contray to popular belief, SFC does not need to be run 3 times. If it cannot fix the corrupt file the first time, then it is incredibly unlikely for it to fix it on the second or third run.

Kind regards,
Stephen

POQ 129 starts:

Just about to go out now, I'll post a fix later today.

Regards,
Stephen

Thanx, also this may sound weird but I left it boot for a long time twice to see if it would eventually boot and it never did but I hear a sound what I'm guessing is thunder or a bomb blowing up? Did you ever hear of such a thing? I googled it but found nothing. OK will wait until later for your reply. Thanx, again!

Hi,

Typing this on my phone ;) Hmmm... I have a feeling it's a hardware issue, and if fixing the corruption doesn't help, I'll ask for a hardware expert to take a look. Hardware is not my forte!

Perhaps a video of the issue may be helpful? You could upload it to YouTube. Just an idea :)

Kind regards,
Stephen

Not sure a video would do any good? All that happens is I turn on power....black screen....cold boot...then it usually boots to windows.

The reason I asked was to possibly get a better idea of what the sound was. However, if the sound was a one off, don't worry about it :)

Let's see if I can get a fix for the corrupt files. . .

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Kind regards,
Stephen

Not sure what you meant by using tags? I'm some what computer literate but not an IT by any means.
I also ran the SFC scannow and it came up clean this time. Not sure how to do the second part = copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
Below is the screen text I've copied and pasted from scan:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Windows\system32>sfc/scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Hi,

Don't worry about the tags, I've edited your post for you :) What I was meaning was to paste the log as follows:
Log goes between the two CODE tags
Anyway...

Since SFC is no longer reporting any corruptions, then my fix did its job. :) If you would like to get the log for me, just open up a command prompt as you did to run the sfc /scannow command, and paste

copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

into the command prompt window, instead of typing sfc /scannow.

Then upload the new file, cbs.txt, from your desktop to your next post.

Since your corruptions are now repaired, how is the system performing?

Regards,
Stephen

I haven't shut it down yet. Will do it now and let you know. I did the
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
and it says:
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
C:\Users\Randy>copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
Access is denied.

You'll need to run the command prompt as an administrator - apologies, I didn't say that!

@ robot...That is what I must have not done because I think I got it now.....key word THINK!!

Wow...you guys are young!! I just rebooted and it looks to be fixed I guess. Will check back later for your response on the cbs file. Also can you give me your opinion as to why it happened? Well I'm going to play some MW3 with my kid now and will check in between matches for your response. You guys rock!!!
