belarc finds 25 updates but windows updates says there is none.

Hi all

I check regularly with Belarc as well as Windows Update on my PC, i recently bought a Acer Aspire one
and did 88 updates (running windows 8) and checked with Belarc on completion and it said there was
another 25 but Widows Updates said there is none.
I tried to download each one individually but when i click the update it takes me to the window website
to download, when i click just down it says to go to the windows update on my PC.

How can i get round this.

You need to use the website from IE due to the use of an ActiveX control, but specific update files can be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog, where they can be installed manually afterwards from the resulting .MSU files downloaded. It's interesting that the WU client says you have zero updates but Belarc says you have updates available. What updates specifically are listed as available by Belarc, and are you sure they're not already installed (check the Windows Update history to see)? I generally only trust the Windows Update client (and \windows\windowsupdate.log) and the MBSA scanner, not 3rd party (non-Microsoft) tools for determining patch levels.

I have checked all the downloaded updates in history and none of the
ones found by Belarc are listed. This same situation arose when i purchased
a new laptop about 3 months ago with W8 and i had to download individually
with that pc also but i had forgotten how i did it.

Have you chosen to install updates for all Microsoft products, or left it at the default of install updates for Windows only? Open up your Windows Update, and let me know what it says next to the line "You receive updates:". If there's a little balloon there, please click on it and allow it to change your settings to all Microsoft products (sorry, I can't provide a screenshot at this time, and nor can I remember the exact wording - can you work it out OK?).

You'll notice most of the updates you're missing are because you don't have Office 2010 SP2 installed, which is recommended if it doesn't break any add-ons you may have installed. The rest are also non-Windows updates, so it would appear that niemiro is correct - your machine isn't installing non-Windows updates because it's not set to search for them. If you really do not have the settings that Tekno Venus mentions for Microsoft update, have you updated to Windows 8.1 yet? This should be there by default in Windows 8.1.
