I have been having so many issues with this audio crackling and it's driving me nuts. I have tested both Realtek and Windows audio drivers, and crackling occurs on both, although slightly less on the Windows one. I have run tests through LatencyMon to make sure that it is an internal issue with my system. I can't find any fixes online so I created this thread. I'll provide information here:

  • System Manufacturer? ASUSTeK
  • Laptop or Desktop? Laptop
  • Exact model number (if laptop, check label on bottom) G501JW
  • OS ? (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista) Windows 10
  • x86 (32bit) or x64 (64bit)? 64 bit
  • Service pack? Not sure
  • What was original installed OS on system? When I received it last year, it had Windows 10. I reset the laptop while it had Windows 10 installed when I first received it
  • Is the OS an OEM version (came pre-installed on system) or full retail version (YOU purchased it from retailer)? OEM, I think
  • Age of system? (hardware) Laptop was made in 2015. I received it last year from someone else, so I do not know when they purchased it
  • Age of OS installation? I don't know.
  • Have you re-installed the OS? I have only reset the laptop when I received it, so I did not reinstall the operating system
  • CPU Intel Core i7 4750HQ
  • RAM (brand, EXACT model, what slots are you using?) 8GB DDR3 Dual Channel, Samsung, M471B5173DB0-YK0. More info in the Speccy link I provided
  • Video Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
  • MotherBoard - (if NOT a laptop) N/A
  • Power Supply - brand & wattage (if laptop, skip this one) N/A
  • Is driver verifier enabled or disabled? Disabled
  • What security software are you using? (Firewall, antivirus, antimalware, antispyware, and so forth) Windows Defender
  • Are you using proxy, vpn, ipfilters or similar software? No
  • Are you using Disk Image tools? (like daemon tools, alcohol 52% or 120%, virtual CloneDrive, roxio software) No
  • Are you currently under/overclocking? Are there overclocking software installed on your system? No

I have attached a link below to the zip file of DxDiag, msinfo32, and the trace file.

Hi finalzephyr,

Did any audio glitches happen while you recorded the trace? It looks like some ndis.sys DPCs are running a little long but I wouldn't think long enough to cause noticeable audio glitches.

Hi finalzephyr,

Did any audio glitches happen while you recorded the trace? It looks like some ndis.sys DPCs are running a little long but I wouldn't think long enough to cause noticeable audio glitches.
I'm not sure what you mean. Are you referring to the regular audio popping and dropouts? I only get them when there are certain sound frequencies.

I'm referring to part of the title of your post - audio popping, crackling, dropouts. Did any occur while you captured the trace?

Can you trigger such glitches while capturing a trace or is it not easily reproduced?

Yes, by pausing and playing media when certain sounds are playing, adjusting an audio slider while audio is playing. I can trigger the dropouts and crackling like that.

It might be helpful to look at a trace where the glitches are happening so please see if you can capture one and make it available for download.

Hopefully this worked. Running a trace is kinda confusing for me, but I assume that the initial command is for starting it and the other is for ending it and generating the trace. I tried to create as much crackling/popping/dropouts as I could.

Thank you. That's correct regarding starting and stopping a trace. I'll have a look and see if I can spot anything.

Also, please run the following command in a cmd prompt window and post a screenshot of the output in a reply.

wmic memorychip get banklabel, configuredclockspeed, DeviceLocator, partnumber, speed
