Hello
I have a problem with game "Wanderer of Absu". When i launch game it crashes. I have a full user-mode dump with game but i have problem with reading a dump. I can not read information about the object that the game refers to or the Security Descriptor with dump. This is my dump:
Absu.exe.4180.dmp (i launched Application Verifier to the game for debugging)
Reinstall the game, Compatibility mode, Run As Administrator didn't help. My configuration:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2,66 GHz
8 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT
Gigabyte EG45-DS2H
Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise
Any ideas?

Hi. . .

The first item that I noticed in the dump was this message -

The application opened an object (such as a file or registry key) and requested access that is granted to at least one non-privileged entity (listed). This suggests that the same operation will work when attempted by non-privileged/standard users.

That was followed by a 0xc0000135 exception error code -

The program can't start because %hs is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

I don't know what "%hs" is, but the message clearly states that a component is missing and although I know you said that you did this already - it wants you to reinstall the app.

The only thing that I can think of is to use the Hidden Administrator user account to install the game and try to play it.

Enable/ Disable the Hidden Administrator User Account (Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista)

Regards. . .

I have a enabled Hidden Administrator User Account but it didn't help.
Hi!

This is an extremely old game. Has it worked on this version of Windows before?
No but I thought maybe it would be possible to run this game on Windows 8.1
This is my latest crash user dump:
CNCRT32.exe.6976.dmp

Try running in compatibility mode for an earlier version of Windows. RIGHT-click on the icon; select "Properties"

Windows 8.1 is very close to W7 and W10 in operation.

The game may be looking for paths found in XP.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

Hi. . .

It is failing with the same 0xc135 exception error code, mentioning the same DLL -

Code:
FAILURE_IMAGE_NAME: ntdll.dll

It does not appear that this game is compatible with Windows 8.1.

Regards. . .

jcgriff2

Hi there,

Can you please download Dependency Walker 2.2 x86 from here: Dependency Walker (depends.exe) Home Page (download links are near the bottom of the page).

Then open up absu.exe in this tool, and make a note of any dependencies which are missing (they are highlighted in red) and list all of the missing dependencies here for us to help you with.

Thank you,

Richard

Also, press Windows Key + R and type in optionalfeatures.exe, and enable Legacy Features > NTVDM, then open a Command Prompt with Run as Administrator and type in FONDUE.exe /enable-feature:NTVDM and restart your computer.

See if it will work then.

EDIT: Please also do this before using Dependency Walker.

OK, so i can't use NTVDM because I have a x64 system. But I use a program Dependency Walker and i turned out that DLL missing is... CNCS232.dll. I downloaded DLL and pasted in location when the game was installed. But when i launch the game the game freeze with spinning Windows wheel. This is log with Dependency Walker:
CNCRT32.dwi

I was able to create a crash dump from this game when is hang. Looking through the 32-bit stack I came across the palette.cox file. Google does not know what a file is. I'm helpless

Ah yeah sorry about that. I actually tried downloading the game myself and couldn't install it because it was a 16-bit app. It turns out, however, that only the installer was 16-bit, the game itself was 32bit so that NTVDM post was non-applicable.

I also tried running the game from another download and after adding CNCS232.dll got the same result as you - a black screen and spinning cursor which completely broke Windows (couldn't even use Task Manager or anything).

I'll briefly take a look at your latest dump when I get home tonight but I wouldn't hold your breath - I suspect this is non-fixable and an old, preferably 32bit, version of Windows in a Virtual PC is likely your best bet.

You had a hard assert 0x80000003 for this dump.

The missing module is from 1999 - the one on the stack -

I just don't believe the game is compatible with Windows 8.1.

You probably need DOS!

I just noticed this for the file palette.cox
Code:
File OS: 10001 DOS Win16

It appears to be a 16-bit file, which would require a much earlier version of Windows like Win95 or Win98 to run.

As you know, Windows 8.1 is x86 (32-bit) + x64.

Regards. . .
