I have run SFC. It reported file corruptions that it could not fix. I will attach the log file next. I was unable to do the paper clip add files method. Add files takes me to a sysnative site. I will use one drive when it is available

Hi there Dave,
The reported corrupt file can be ignored.

Please download and install the following update for your version of Windows Vista: Microsoft Update Catalog
After the update has been installed, try checking for updates again.

The download worked fine. Windows update has been running since 10:46PM EDT, It is now 11;%% AM EDT. I will let it run until I hear back from you

Unfortunately, Windows Update on Vista and Windows 7 are currently very, very, slow.
Be sure that you disable hibernation and sleep in power options and allow the check for updates to run overnight until it completes.

I have let it run overnight before, Two days ago I let it run for 20 hours or more ( I meant to shut it off at 4 but I actually shut it off at 7 ). I should add that the last update was in 2011, so there are lots of updates. I have not tried to run SURT. Should I?

- What Service Pack has been installed ? SP 1 or SP 2 ? SP 2 was issued in september 2011. If you've got SP 1 then try to download & install SP 2.
- Run the SFCfix tool and post the results in your next reply.
- Visit the website

The URL contains a reference to the month in which it was published.

"2016-03" for March 2016.
"2016-04" for April 2016.
etc.

I am running SP2.

I tried each of the update catalogs starting with the top one, I successfuklly downloaded each. When I tried to run each standalone installer kept spinning and i could not stop using the cancel button; I used task manager to stop each.

I have not yet tried Willy2 's ideas

I tried Willy2's ideas. I went back to the march,2016 pqge and installed the iones there and did the same for all pages through nov,2016. this was yesterday. i then restarted and then started windows update. I started at 3:46 yesterday afternoon 11/15; it is still running. I am going to let it run. Any other ideas?

After 3 days on 11/18 I got a bunch of updates to install. I have run windows update twice and it seems to be working, but slowly. Should I run some tests before this is considered solved?

sorry for the long delay. I just got back from a thanksgiving holiday. I ran windows update today and got some updates fairly quickly. Seems like windows update is ok for now, After a couple more Tuesdays we will see,

Are there any other specific tests you would like me to run ?
