So, I've been looking into vacuums and other cleaning equipment and I'm curious to see what other people use around the world. Also sorry to the UK folk, but "the Hoover" is a brand of vacuum not just an object .

Well there was supposed to be a poll with this post but the thing timed out on me so here are the options:

• Carpets - Eureka
• Carpets - Kirby
• Carpets - Bissell
• Carpets - iRobot
• Hard Surface - Swiffer

• Hard Surface - Bissell

• Cleaning? What is this you speak of... My floors clean themselves.

Not sure if you've ever been on or heard of the site Reddit before, but there's a pretty popular AMA (Ask Me Anything) on the site by a vacuum repair technician. So popular in fact, he's done 4!

His recommendations:

*Edit: I've been asked to post my personal preferences with regard to brands. As I said before, there is no bad vacuum; Just vacuums built for their purpose. That being said, here are my brand choices in order:

Miele for canisters

Riccar for uprights

Hoover for budget machines

Sanitaire or Royal for commercial machines

Dyson if you just can't be talked out of a bagless machine.

Personally I use a little bit of everything, I use Eureka for my choice of vacuum. While I use Swiffer and a broom for my hard surfaces.

Have a newish Dyson upright here, efficient yes, noisy... very!
Has been banished from inside the house & is now used exclusively in the garage.

Much prefer the Miele for inside.

I always thought canister vacuums were cool and retro.

We just bought a handheld Dyson for cleaning our carpeted stairs and upholstery. We use a Kenmore (Sears brand) canister for the hardwood floors. We also have a Hoover upright that I use down in the Man Cave.

We have multiple floors, I have a whole array of cleaning tools on the second floor, on the main floor also has a whole array as well. The basement simply has a vacuum.
