A Herd of Deer Stops by New Jersey Home for Dessert Cookies!

We get quite a few Roe Deer around where I live, but none tame enough to come near you. Most you usually see of them is a flash of white as they run away.

One exception. A couple of years back it was really cold, with a hard frost, and a herd of about a dozen let us get close in the woods. We were on one side of the beck (stream) and they stood still on the other side, even though we had the dogs with us (I'd put them on their leads so they couldn't chase). Strangely they didn't seem to mind us being there, and just strollled away after a few minutes.

I live near the coast in the Netherlands and in the dunes there are many deer living around. Last year a deer got into trouble because it got entangled in electric fence with its antlers. After jumping over several ditches, the animal was unable to get out.

It's not a good idea to feed wild deer. For one it makes them group together making it easier for any diseases to spread among them. It also makes them more likely to become a nuisance. Depending on the food it can also cause diarrhea and lead to dehydration. It seems like a friendly thing to do, but I'd avoid it
