Just ~60 or so miles west of me, Buffalo, NY has more than an excess of snow. Apparently, storms must be given a name in order to secure disaster aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). As a result, the storm that hit Buffalo and surrounding areas yesterday has been named "Knife" because it cut like a knife "in the heart of Erie County."
For anyone not familiar with the area, Western NYS usually gets hit with LES (Lake Effect Snow) off Lake Erie early in the season as colder air passes across the warmer lake temperatures. Once Lake Erie freezes, LES tends to shift to the north -- and as storms move down from Canada across the much larger Lake Ontario the area where I live gets hit.
With this particular storm, the air temperature was 24 degrees warmer than the water. As a result, when this narrow front crossed Lake Erie, it picked up a ton of moisture. Buffalo set a new record -- 76 inches of snow -- the most snowfall EVER in a 24-hour period in the U.S. and it is still snowing with up to another two feet of snow possible in some areas.
The news media has posted lots of images and videos of the storm but the image below, posted in Twitter, shows what the front looked like coming across Lake Erie yesterday morning.
BTW, the Buffalo Bills are scheduled to play the New York Jets in the Ralph Wilson Stadium on Sunday. Want to earn some extra cash and tickets? Buffalo Bills offer money, tickets to help shovel out stadium
