Okay :) Please start with the following:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

 1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
 2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
 3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
 4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
 5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
 6. SFCFix will now process the script.
 7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
 8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Afterwards, please run DISM again and attach CBS.log after it runs.

Also CBS logs ran afterwars including DISM for checkhealth, scanhealth and Restorehealth (including /source:WIM:D:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess) to a mounted 2012R2 image.
Checkhealth showed no corruption but scanhealth and restorehealth both report 14098 corruption errors

Very interesting. It appears that your problem might be located somewhere within the registry:

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
 1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
 2. Try running DISM just like you have in the past.
 3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar

 1. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
 2. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log

Can I just confirm what the size of the LogFile.PML is supposed to be? I started the trace when I started the DISM - RestoreHelath, but by the time I got the 14098 error it had logged 18 million events over about a ten minute period. The file is processing but it looks as though it is going to be 5GB+
Should I be changing the options?

Kind Regards
Tom

Thank you.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.

Hello!

Unfortunately, I have very bad news. Your COMPONENTS hive is corrupt beyond repair. Unless you have an earlier backup, I am afraid your only option is performing a Repair Installation of the Server.

Let me know if you require assistance with that.

Hi Softwaremaniac. thanks for your help on this one. At least you confirmed that the server is beyond help before I rebuild it. my backups are in days and not years im afraid.

Thanks anyway ;)
