Windows XP - End of Support

Whether it be finances, work requirements (i.e., legacy programs), or just because you love Windows XP, remember that it won't last forever. Not only does "forever" apply to the hardware*, it also applies to the end of support by Microsoft.

As shown at Microsoft Product Lifecycle, the Extended Support End Date for Windows XP is April 8, 2014.

*Even if you can replace hardware yourself, at some point the parts will no longer be available.

A whole lot of company's need to get on a roll with getting all systems up to newer versions. i know here at NASA alot of systems still run XP, but they are doing refreshes but you can only do so many computers at a time. I think 2014-2015 is gonna be a struggle for many once the support stops.

I think the push to replace any remaining Windows XP systems in enterprise environments will depend on when Microsoft discontinues the sale of Windows 7.

My wife's business will continue to use XP for the foreseeable future.
The proprietary software that they use just doesn't get along w/Win7

Upgrading will take require some new hardware (minimal expense) - but the upgrade on the proprietary software will be where the real cost is. The makers want to charge a lot more for their Win7 compatible system (and they just bought out the owners of the WinXP compatible software). This is for a veterinary hospital, and they require a support contract with the purchase of the software.

People have had a long time to think about upgrading though, it will inevitably cost money to upgrade - but when XP goes it'll have been supported for 13 years.

ah, xp, we hardly knew thee...

it is gawd-awful expensive to re-develop existing software to run on a new platform.
vista/7 are so radically different than xp, that it is far far better to keep xp.

    i helped a m.d. move his in-house developed software from a 2003 server to a 2008 r2 server.
and unless you've ever done that, you cannot imagine the horrors that that involves.
(yes, he has a programing team.)

so, yes, xp it is for a long time to come.

JMH, you have no way of knowing how absolutely, positively, incredibly apt your choice of words fits.

    Temmu,
