Just a thought in passing. Are you sure you need a HD? Has your computer acted up since the re-install?

    OT have you installed SP-1?

My computer's been acting up a lot since reinstall, actually 26 dumps already. I'm making a disc copy of Memtest right now; I'm also trying out that utility linked last post by Laxer. I'm just hoping it isn't my motherboard right now.

I am currently in the process of updated to SP1 but I don't know if it will help. I can barely update it because I just crash all the time.

EDIT: Was taking a look at BSOD dumps and I had a BSoD pointing towards PCIIDEX.sys. Hopefully this isn't something really bad, lol.

    EDIT 2: Haven't BSoD'd in a while. Strange.

It's alright, will get the job done. If you can dish out ~$10, you can get a 7200RPM and more capacity.

    Example.

I didn't see any mention of a hard drive test in the thread so far - so I suggest this free procedure BEFORE buying a new hard drive: http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

Great suggestion. I figured after 80+ replies OP may have tested his HDD (would have been a lot for me to read through). My apologies if I have caused any added confusion.

    I would do the following:

    1. Run diagnostics on HDD.

    2. Run Memtest86+ (you can burn to disc OR make a flash drive bootable and use that).

After what I've seen so far, it seems to be a hardware issue. The thing that ties it all together for me personally is the fact that you mentioned you were crashing during Windows installations (with the recovery drive AND with a disc install). The two tests above will likely show you your issue, I'd be very surprised if it was anything but RAM or HDD. It could possibly be the motherboard, but as it's a laptop... it's rather unlikely. Usually the drives and the RAM on laptops are the first and most common to go.

Sorry, couldn't come back recently because I sent it in. Found a spare old laptop so I'm just typing out my post here. Found out that for some reason my warranty was extended from what was told me, so I sent my laptop in. Hopefully they manage to fix it. If not... yeah. MemTest turned out alright when I ran it.

Ah, that's great news! You should be good to go then :)

Keep us updated once the replacement laptop arrives, whenever that is.

Alright, my laptop's been fixed. They replaced my CPU, casing, keyboard, volume PCA, hard drive, and then updated my BIOS (which was updated). Thanks everyone!
