Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

I see my C drive but it has it listed as a Seagate Barracuda with a size of 931 GB that does not match my C which is 918 GB. I use Seagate external drives when I back up my computer which is a Dell. I don't have my Seagate external plugged in. Never knew Dell computers had Seagate internal drives. Confused.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Please download and run SeaTools for Windows.

Before the installation begins you will be prompted to either Decline or Accept the terms of the installation, click on I Accept.

Once the installation begins you will see an image similar to the one below.

    1. SeaTools for Windows will search for HDDs and SSDs on your computer. Please remove any external storage devices connected via USB ports.

    2. Detected Drives will list the HDDs and SSDs found. Place a check mark in the drive box you want to run the scan on. This should be the drive that has the operating system installed on it, this is usually C: drive.

    3. You will see Basic Tests toolbar above Detected Drives, move the mouse pointer over this to open the test options. Please click on Long Generic Test

    4. This will start the scan. When the scan is complete you will see the result under Test Status , please post the results in your topic.

    5. The test will indicate either Pass or Fail. Post the results of the scan in your topic.

    6. Click on Help, then click on View Log File. If the scan failed take a screen shot of the Log File and post it in your topic.

@softwaremaniac: I just pulled up SeaTools for Windows and the disk it found (my C drive) matches the serial number of the one in GSmart that I questioned therefore I'm going to try and move forward with your instructions. I'll also run the SeaTools. Thanks.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

GSmartControl: after a few hours it hit around 70%, then it said on the Self-Tests screen "test aborted: cannot parse smart ctl output: no ATA sections could be parsed". There was nothing in red or pink. HOWEVER, on the General tab, it says Overall Health Self-Assessment Test: PASSED.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Try another chkdsk c: /R from an elevated command prompt.
If it won't solve the problem, try SeaTools for DOS (click).

  11. #51

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Ran chkdsk c: /R again. No change. Still VSS errors in my event viewer.

How to Fix System Restore Error 0x81000203 on Windows 10?

Could you scroll down to Method 2. Open an Elevated Command Prompt and let me know if you think this is worth a try.

Interesting, you can try these, but make sure you backup the keys before deleting them.

  13. #53

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

    Didn't work not surprisingly.

Turns out I don't have the DisableSR and DisableConfig subkeys so I skipped those two commands. The only command that wasn't successful was the VSS command which failed with an error "The shadow copy provider had an error. Please see the system and application event logs for more information". Event viewer shows Shadow Copy Provider Service errors Event ID 12289.

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

Try my previously mentioned method about "volsnap"

  15. #55

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

I asked this before but I don't believe you answered: In each of them the value *service* is set to simply "volume" in the Data column. Are you saying change all those to "volsnap"?

Also, is it OK to get rid of the GSmart and reinstall CCleaner?

    GSmart, yes, CCleaner no.
    Yes, your assumption is correct.

Also please export the key somewhere prior to making modifications!

Can't edit the keys. "Cannot edit Service: Error writing the value's new contents".

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

This is a Permissions issue. You will have to edit them in order to be able to make the modifications and then restore them back to how they were in the first place.

  19. #59

Re: System Protection Tab Error / Can't Create Restore Points

No idea how to do that. Sorry, you would have to give me step-by-step instructions.
