[SOLVED] [W10AU x64] S.Protection: can't create RestorePoints. FIX: UPDATED TO CREATORS UPDATE

I am religious about keeping 2-3 system restore points available. I recently found that all of the system restore points previously viewable in CCleaner have vanished and I cannot create new ones nor configure SR, in general. When I try opening the System Protection tab, I get "there was an unexpected error in the property page; System Restore encountered an error. Please try to run System Restore again" (0x81000203).

I have ensured the requisite services are running and set to automatic: Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider, Windows Image Acquisition, Task Scheduler, and Volume Shadow Copy. I also have tried disabling my Malwarebytes Premium. I have also tried getting into safe mode but received an error something along the lines of "system configuration couldn't save..." I tried resetting but received error "there was a problem resetting your PC".

I went into advanced settings (the blue screen) and was able to access System Restore but it shows very old restore points as opposed to my more recent ones. I ran chkdsk either fix or repair option can't recall which and I think it said it found and repaired some stuff but can't find details in Event Viewer. SFC /scannow reports no corruption. Event Viewer is loaded with VSS errors (calling a routine on a Shadow Copy Provider) (catastrophic failures). A specific System Restore error refers to servicing stack winsxs/amd64 and "Windows Modules Installer".

Also - can you tell me more about the area you went to that said no restore points were available; then the other area you went to that showed old restore points. I can't visualize in my head where exactly you went -- these 2 different areas that gave you 2 very different results.

Hi JC,

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly. I'm running the latest version of CCleaner and update it whenever a new version is released. For what it's worth, Malwarebytes Premium has found nothing and when I ran sfc /scannow last night, it came back as finding corrupt files but they were able to repair them (they were Windows Defender definition files).

And to try and be more clear...when I go to Control Panel/Recovery, I am able to click on Open System Restore and this is where I see the three old restore points. I have not tried to use those points because they are so old. But when I click on Configure System Restore, that's when I get the error message immediately. My routine is typically that I use CCleaner, then use Junkware Removal Tool by Malwarebytes to create a new restore point, but JRT is unable to create a new restore point.

On CCleaner, when you go to Tools/System Restore, this is the place where my more recent restore points are no longer there.

Also, in what may or may not be related, I'm also having a problem with Search (been having search problems for a long time where files don't show when I search for them even though I have the selections chosen under "indexing". When I run the troubleshooter, I get "the program searchindexer.exe has failed recently. Please check Security & Maintenance for possible solutions to the problem" and it ends there.

I also was unable to use the Shut Down function last night. When I chose "shut down" it only restarted and I had to push my power button to shut down.

Also, the Volume Shadow Copy, Windows Image Acquisition, and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider services despite all being set to Automatic did not start at startup. I'm speculating but the system restore issues began a few days ago right around the time I installed Windows Update KB4038801.

If you have installed any security software, then try to disable the Security Software temporarily and check if it helps.

I'll run it right now. Question in the meantime, if I run the batch script, will it affect my ability to turn on/off Windows Defender? I'm asking because the last time I used a program (tweaking.com) that reset all Windows services to default, it greyed out my options to turn off WD and it was a huge problem. That won't happen this time, correct? Thanks.

Sorry for late reply this script only resets Windows services to default startup settings it does not change how you can manage Windows services.

I have take a look at your CBS.log file and there were corrupted files which are repaired.

Can you also execute following command:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

If above command does not worked you have option to repair install Windows 10.

Before I forget, I wanted to mention I have the Home version of Windows 10 therefore don't have access to group policy.

Unfortunately the batch didn't help; still can't configure SR and still getting the search indexer error I mentioned (I even deleted/rebuilt the index).

@softwaremaniac: re: testing in clean boot, from my initial post "I have also tried getting into safe mode but received an error something along the lines of 'system configuration couldn't save...' I tried resetting but received error 'there was a problem resetting your PC'. If you think that error would not necessarily prevent me from getting into safe mode, I can try again. Let me know your thoughts.

Ran DISM and it said "restore operation completed successfully". Below is the log:

Let me know the next step. I'd really rather try some other options before a repair install. Would tweaking.com help? SFCFix? Can you speculate as to what actually happened here? Thanks again.

I would not go the Repair Install route yet.

Farbar Service Scanner
1. Download Farbar Service Scanner from here, and move it to the Desktop
2. Right-click on FSS.exe > Run as Administrator
3. Checkmark everything, and click Scan

4. Once it finishes, Notepad will open FSS.txt on your Desktop. Attach the file to your next reply.

Go to services.msc and ensure that this is running. It should be set to Automatic start.

it was not running. I set it to Automatic and started it. Didn't work. I didn't reboot, though.
