Hey there - I joined late last night (early this morning) after I found some amazing forums on SFC and DISM problems. Using the advice, I was able to get SFC to work properly and fix corrupt files by using DISM RestoreHealth with a mounted Windows 10 ISO. I just wanted to thank everybody for taking such great notes!

Now, the reason I had the SFC/DISM issue was because I was trying to solve a windows update problem that I've been having for about a month. Each time WU runs on my Dell XPS 15 9550 I receive the following error: "Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Manager - Error 0x800f0203", and my windows update history has dozens of the same error. I was able to fix corrupt files using SFC, but the update problem still persists.

In device manager, the "Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework" parent shows two functioning instances:
  • "Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Memory Participant"
  • "Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Manager"
Where both have driver version of **8.1.10605.221**.
The remainder of the entries under the parent (6) are titled:
  • "Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Generic Participant"
and they are all in error, showing the following status: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)". I am attaching a screenshot at the end of the message.

Does anybody know what could be causing this? I'm sure this isn't the right place to post a question, so please let me know if I should move it. Any advice would be appreciated!

Welcome to Sysnative. I can do my best to assist with this but we may need to refer you to one of our other forums. Let's see. I first need to validate that your logs are clean so please do the following.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thank you very much for the help - I really appreciate it.

FYI, I ran "SFC /SCANNOW" & the same DSIM command last night (had to mount a win10 ISO first), which I believe fixed a problem with a shortcut file (absolutely no idea why/how that would be an issue): "[SR] Repairing corrupted file [l:69 ml:70]"\??\C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools"\[l:20]"Windows Defender.lnk" from store". Anyway, here is my CBS.txt file:

Thanks for the info. Are you installing these updates (Intel(R) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework) through Windows Update? I don't recommend installing driver updates through Windows Update. It's best to go to the manufacturers website to update any driver/firmware updates. Please let me know.

I installed the latest driver (8.1.10605.221,A02) from the Dell 9550 driver site a few months ago (Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Driver Driver Details | Dell US). WU didn't start bugging me about this until a month or so later.

I've also run the Intel Driver Update Utility (Download Intel(R) Driver Update Utility), which indicates that there isn't a newer driver available. The only update that Intel indicates is available is the Intel Chipset Device software, but it warns against installing non-Dell customized drivers. It also says that my current installed version is 14.5.2.1088, whereas the new version is 10.1.1.14. I'm not sure how the latest version on Intel's website is so many revisions behind my installed version, so I've never pulled the trigger on that one. I hope I'm not missing something obvious - let me know what you think.

Thanks for the info. I think you did things correctly. Please do the following.

FRST Scan

1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
3. Please ensure you place a check mark in the Addition.txt check box at the bottom of the form before running (if not already).
4. Press Scan button.
5. It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should now be the desktop)
6. Please copy and paste log back here.
7. Another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST64.exe) will be generated Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

Thanks for the info. As suspected and as you mentioned Windows Update is trying to install this update every time it runs. To resolve the Windows Update part, next time you check for Windows Updates, look for the Intel Update and then right-click on it and hide the update. This will prevent the issue from attempting every time you do windows updates. To solve the device manager issue I would recommend that you post an inquiry in our Windows 10 forum as the experts there have more experience in hardware/software than I do. My specialty is Windows Update/Servicing issues.
