Yet another Windows Update error 80070002 - thinking of reinstalling Windows?

Help Ive looked at every bit of advice possible and used every windws fixit tool possible, however my PC which has windows 7 home premium has not been able to carry out a windows update for around 5 weeks. I carried out the System Update Readiness Tool (SUR) check 48 hours ago with the following log.

Should I just give now and reinstall windows, having backed up all of my documents, photographs and music?

Thats absolutely fine re one of your trainees, with you oversseing the repair. Look forward to hearing back from you, I am reluctant to reinstall Windows as it will mean also reinstalling all of my other programmes etc. However this remains a last resort. Hope you can help.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.


  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put
    Code:
    tags around the log to break up the text.


Step#2 - SFC Scan


  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
Note: If the file is too large to attach, please right-click cbs.txt, point to Send to, and then click Compressed (zipped) folder and upload the cbs.zip file instead.

sfc.scannow still would not work on second attempt. Message "Windows Resource Protection could not erform the requested operation."
 
I'd like to get some more information from the log file used by SFC.

CBS Log File

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.
 
Let's try this:

Export SideBySide


  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide
  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file SxS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.
Please include a link to the uploaded file in your reply.
 
There's some corrupt keys in the Software hive that need to be repaired.
Please follow these instructions to export and upload the hive.

Export SOFTWARE Hive


Please download RegBak (by AceLogix Software) from the link below and save it to your Desktop.


  • Right-click on regbak.zip then select Extract all... and extract the files to your Desktop
    For 32-bit (x86) editions of Windows, double-click on regbak.exe
    For 64-bit (x64) editions of Windows, double-click on regbak64.exe​


    If you are unsure whether you have x86 or x64 Windows, see here
  • Without changing any options, click Next. RegBak will now backup all of your registry hives.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\RegBak\{Date}\ and copy the SOFTWARE file (it has no extension) to your Desktop
  • Right click on the SOFTWARE file (on your desktop) and choose Send to then Compressed (zipped) folder
  • Upload this file using any of the following options:
    Microsoft Skydrive
    Dropbox
    SendSpace (or any other file-sharing site of your preference)​

If there are so many corruptions that this is going to take ages to correct, I am happy give up and to make a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional (I have all of my files backed up). It just depends if the problem can be solved in a reasonable time. please let me know with your informed opinion.

We found a corrupt key and are ready to fix it. It will take some coordination between you and us to be online at the same time so that you can send us an updated software hive, we'll fix it and send it back and have you replace it. This should take no more than 30 minutes to complete. Then we can see if there are other issues that need to be repaired. If you feel that you don't want to go this route and would prefer to wipe and load your machine that is fine too. It's completely up to you. Just let us know what your intentions are. Thanks.
