Hello,

I have a problem with our 2019 server. It would not install the latest update KB5023702. We have several with the same SW on it, but only this one behaves this way. DISM and SFC/scannow passes

Could you please help?

I attached the ComponentsScanner.txt and sidebyside hive. The component file and CBSlogs can be found here - valid for 7 days.

Thanks in advance Jan.

Just to add this is in a "offline" environment using WSUS server on LAN. But the install fails even when I tried to download and install the KB manually.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

For further research I'll need to do some checks. Could you please perform the following to check a few components in the WinSxS folder.

Download the
577bf0efb8088-FRST.png
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link
  • Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Press the Fix button.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally.
  • When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Could you please check the following folder as well? I have made a mistake in the last script, I copied the "ru-ru" directory instead of "ja-jp"..

Open an elevated command prompt and run the following command. Attach Dirlist.txt to your next post.
Code:
dir /s /a %systemroot%\WinSxS\msil_microsoft.identitys..anagement.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.17763.1432_ja-jp_93da3ae5db67a692 > "%userprofile%\Desktop\Dirlist.txt"

It says file not found and there is only header of the disk in the file.

Just ran the command with asterix after the "..anagement" (if that helps at all)

Code:
dir /s /a %systemroot%\WinSxS\msil_microsoft.identitys..anagement.resources_* > "%userprofile%\Desktop\Dirlist.txt"

I assume the Japanese language package is not installed on this server?

Hi,

Step 1.Replace Components Hive Manually

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download COMPONENTS.ZIP here: COMPONENTS.zip and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on it and select Extract all.... Make sure the "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click Extract.
  3. Now we have the COMPONENTS file that we will be using to replace your current one.
  4. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config
  5. Right-click on the current COMPONENTS file and select rename. Rename it to COMPONENTS.bad.
Note: If you get an error that the file is in use, reboot your computer and then try again.
  6. Take the file from the Components folder on your desktop and paste it into C:\Windows\System32\config

Step 2. Download

  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 3. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

is there a point attempting to install the update at this stage or shall I wait?

Here's the next fix, but is too large to attach so I've uploaded the file to WeTransfer. SFCFix.zip

Unfortunately failed again.

Please run DISM again, but use another server in your network as source. Replace servername with the correct name of that machine.
Code:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\\ServerName\C$\Windows\WinSxS\ /LimitAccess

Code:
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.17763.3406

Image Version: 10.0.17763.4010

[==========================100.0%==========================] The restore operation completed successfully.
The operation completed successfully.

Shall I try to install it now manually? Or reboot first?

Please reboot the server and then attempt to update again. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Ok, I tried to install it manually again, it failed with a different error this time:

Last failed install attempt on ‎19/‎04/‎2023 - 0x8007371b

After that I checked for the updates again, this update KB5023702 is no longer being offered by the WSUS as a new one was released KB5025229. And that is now failing for the same reason as the one before - Error 0x800f0982.

I've run DISM as above using the other machine as a source, that passed, tried the updated again... failed again.

CBS_log attached.
