Hello everyone,
I've seen some other threads with similar problems, but the solutions where pretty situational.

Windows Server 2022 keeps failing at the 2023-01 Cumulative Update KB5022291. It runs up to a 100% Installation then error 0x800f0988 appears.

sfc /scannow finds errors, but can't repair them. DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth also throws errors, but can't resolve anything.
Attached are the CBS logs of both.

Installing the Update manually from the Update Catalog fails as well.

Thanks in advance

Hi I'm Gary R,

I'm a Security Analyst, and a Windows Update Trainee, and I'd like to help you with your problems.

As a trainee there may be times when my instructions must first be checked by a qualified update expert, before I post them. This will by necessity introduce some delay when/if that occurs, so please be patient.

I am looking over your logs now, and will be back as soon as I've finished analysing them.

Can you please post me a copy of your Components Hive ....

  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • The file will likely be too large to upload here, if so please upload to a file sharing service.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

Please post me the link to the file

Thanks.

Looking it over now. Might take me a while, but I'll get back to you ASAP.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Next ...

  • Click Search button and type Command Prompt
  • From the results, right click on the Command Prompt icon, and select Run as administrator
  • A Command Window will open.
  • Copy paste the command below into it, then press Enter
  • Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Once DISM has finished running ...
    • Please attach your ... C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log ... to your next reply.
  • If the file is too large, upload it to a file sharing service, and post me the link.
  • Examples of services to upload to are WeTransfer and TransferKit and SendFileOnline

If you haven't already tried to update, please try now and let me know if you're successful.

If unsuccessful please post me the CBS.log created after your failed update attempt.

Worked flawlessly now.

I truely appreaciate your expertise. I was not able to get my head around the problem.

Would this fix work for 2 other WS2022 Systems? Which have the same setup? Since they showing the same error since now.

Glad to hear you were able to update.

Probably not. It's impossible to say without seeing their CBS.logs

What I recommend you do, is to open up a new topic here for the first of your other WS2022 machines, and post its CBS.log

I can then look it over, and see whether it's the same problem, or just one that's giving the same error code, but for a different reason.

Once we've resolved that, we can look at the other machine.

Best to do each machine in it's own topic, otherwise things can get confusing.

I'll mark this topic as Solved, and look forward to helping you with your other machines.
