Hey,

I have the following problem resolving errors on a Windows Server 2016
Some Notes:
- HyperV Host
- Windows Server 2016 as a VM
- DomainController

The following errors appearing after a Net Framework 4.8 Installation (Offline Installer) that was stuck at 0%:
Role and feature update error: error when requesting to list the features available on the specified server.
The feature list could not be retrieved.
The specified package is not a valid Windows package. Error 0x800f0805
- Windows SFC exits with not fixable errors
- First DISM seems fine but after a restart all errors persist
- A DISM with a compatible WS2016 WIM runs into error: 1734 the array bounds are invalid

- At the actual State the Server makes no Updates
- Cant Change anything on Roles or Features
- an .Net Update (important dependency) is not possible

attached CBS to thread.
I Hope to find here some help.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Step 1. Download
56f31e53c97da-SFCFix.PNG
SFCFix and save it to your desktop.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2. Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

Hi,

I'am afraid the Component Based Servicing hive is damaged beyond repair.

Export CBS (Component Based Servicing) hive
  • Click on the Start button and type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).

  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

As I suspected, the Component Based Servicing hive is badly damaged and almost empty, do you have recent backups of this system and the registry files C:\Windows\System32\Config\...

Sure, I have backups, but I need to check when the error occurred.
I'm not sure if the .NET installation just triggered a message for an existing error.
Are there any indicators I can look for?

The CBS log file from November last year already shows an indication that the Component Based Servicing hive is damaged. So you'll need to find backups before that date, to restore this server.
Rich (BB code):
2022-11-07 15:55:17, Info CBS Failed to find a matching version for servicing stack: C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.14393.4349_none_7f09d74e21ec00ab\ [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]
2022-11-07 15:55:17, Info CBS Failed to find servicing stack directory in online store. [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]

It's vexing there are no backups older than the current state in the production systems.
Perhaps I'll have some luck with older HDDs that were set aside.

I can offer a replica that is identical, but only basic functions are running there.

If you can't find backups on the older HDD's, then there is unfortunately no other option but than reinstall this server.
