Hi,

I'm trying to fix my friends computer, Windows Update won't download and/or install updates since I don't when. I get error 80070490 in Windows Update, when looking att installed updates, the list is empty. I've tried a lot of things, trying to do a repair using a Vista disc, running sfc /scannow and so on. And then I found SFCFix and thought, this is my last chance before doing a clean install.

The SFCFix.txt is also in the attached .zip-file.

I hope I got everything you guys need to help me as I don't have direct access to the computer, although I can get the files you might need but it can take a while.

Thanks!

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. If you are still in need of assistance, please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR) - Need a fresh log
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Step#2 - Export CBS Registry Key

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file CBS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace.

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Hi,

thanks for replying and I'm sorry for my late reply, haven't had access to the computer until now.

I did the two steps you asked to, but the System Update Readiness Tool couldn't run, I started it and after a minute or two it said something like

"This update is not valid for this computer." (I used the Swedish version since the computer has Swedish language pack, so I'm not sure my translation of the error message is correct.) I ran it a while ago and it worked then, don't know why it won't run this time.

Below are the files you requested in a .zip-file.

Thanks again!

That usually means you are running the incorrect version. You need the Vista x86 version. Can you provide me a link to the one that you downloaded and tried to run?

Hi,

sorry for my very very late answer. Got the computer at my place now so I will hopefully be able to reply quicker from now on.

You were right, I used the wrong version, used an old link to a older version of SUR by mistake. Didn't notice you provided the correct one, again sorry.

I've run the correct SUR and here are a new CheckSUR.log and CBS export.

Thank you!

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Thanks for the info. Please don't follow any additional steps other than what I provide as it will complicate the fix/resolution. Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR) - Need a fresh log
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

It appears I need to retrieve your Software hive, make the fix myself and then send back to you for you to replace. The Software hive is volatile so you want to ensure that you don't install anything after sending me the hive. I'll make the changes immediately and send back with instructions for you to replace it. We don't want too much time to pass between this process so coordination is in order.

So let's do the following first.
Disable Windows Update
1. Click your Start button and type cmd.exe into the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Click Continue if prompted with the User Account Control dialog.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter. Note: You will have to right-click your mouse in the command-prompt window and select paste. You can't use the keyboard shortcuts.
sc stop wuauserv && sc config wuauserv start= disabled

4. You should see something similar to the following. The important parts are in Red. If you see this, you did it correctly.

Code:
SERVICE_NAME: wuauserv
        TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
        STATE : 3 [COLOR=#ff0000]STOP_PENDING[/COLOR]
                                (NOT_STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
        WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
        SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
        CHECKPOINT : 0x1
        WAIT_HINT : 0x7530
[SC] ChangeServiceConfig [COLOR=#ff0000]SUCCESS[/COLOR]

Next, let me know a couple block of times that you will be available to do the next steps. We need about 30 minutes where we are both online. I'm currently in Eastern time (UTC -4).

Thanks.

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Wow, this is waaay beyond my computer skills.

Okay, I've done that, and got exactly what you wrote back. I'm available now and a few hours more until bedtime (I'm on UTC +1). The closest I'm available after tonight are on Sunday from around 10-11 am local time.

Thanks!

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Let's go ahead and do the first fix now then. The first thing I need is to get your SOFTWARE hive. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Retrieve Software Hive
Note: The Software have has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to the hive so it's not in the public form.
  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy this file to your Desktop.
  • Now right click on this file on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just PM me your link.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

OK. We may have to do this twice but I made the first fix. Please do the following to replace your software hive.

SOFTWARE Hive Replacement with RegBak

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Close all open programs and save all your work. You will need to reboot the machine during this process.
  2. Download SOFTWARE2.zip from --> I'll PM you the link<-- to your desktop and extract the file SOFTWARE to your desktop (it has no file extension)
  3. Navigate to the folder you saved your backup using RegBak (It should be C:\Windows\RegBak\PC-NAME\DATE)
  4. Inside the folder, double click Windows, System 32 and config to get to a folder with the SOFTWARE hive in:
    2014-10-1818_56_49-config_zpscbb8aad0.png
  5. Copy the SOFTWARE file from your desktop (not the zip file), to that folder. When asked if you want to replace the current SOFTWARE file, choose yes.
  6. Open RegBak again. Highlight the backup in the list (it should be the only one), and press Restore. Click Start. RegBak will reboot your computer to complete the restore process.

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Ok, it's done, the computer is rebooting while I'm writing this.

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Excellent. Once it comes back up, please do the following.

System Update Readiness Tool (SUR) - Need a fresh log

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Can't run it, I get error 0x80070422. Do I need to enable Windows Update again or something?

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Good call. Sorry about that. Yes you do. You can do it manually if you know how. Set it to Automatic (Delayed Start) and enable the service. If not you can do the following.

Enable Windows Update
You can't use the keyboard shortcuts.
sc config wuauserv start= delayed-auto && sc start wuauserv

4. You should see something similar to the following. The important parts are in Red. If you see this, you did it correctly.

Code:
[SC] ChangeServiceConfig [COLOR=#ff0000]SUCCESS[/COLOR]
SERVICE_NAME: wuauserv
        TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
        STATE : 2 [COLOR=#ff0000]START_PENDING[/COLOR]
                                (NOT_STOPPABLE, NOT_PAUSABLE, IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
        WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
        SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
        CHECKPOINT : 0x0
        WAIT_HINT : 0x7d0
        PID : 1136
        FLAGS :

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Well, that took some time but here's a new CheckSUR.
