Brian, Hope that you are still monitoring this website. I have a Dell Inspiron 1505 PC with Vista 32 bit Home Basic. Some time ago, I installed the WSUS Online Update. I just installed the last version for Vista which is 10.9.2. The unit now automatically finds the updates and I can install the windows definitions but when I try to install a Security Upgrade the installation fails and gives a "80070490" error.

The important issue is that ONLY Vista Security Updates will not complete the install procedure. [The unit starts and downloads the KB files, then starts to install the KB, looks as though it completes the install and then issues the "failed" message and give me the 80070490 error.

I have prepared a zip file with the information you need that you can download from my server.

Unfortunately, the SFCFIX program appears not to work on my unit but I will continue to try.

The zip programs contains CheckSUR.log and Registry Hive Files.reg files.

I hope that you can help me .. Thanks, Ed

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86) Cannot Install Security Upd

Note; I have finally figured out how to get the SPCFIX Program to work.

I have added the results of the SPCFix.txt file to my zip file which now contains the following files.
CBS.log (which is the renamed Registry Hive Files .. aka CBS section of the registry)
CheckSUR.log

Hi edosango. :welcome:

I'd re-run the sfcfix tool, because it seems it (or MS surt tool?) fixed some forty-thousands of errors.
Then re-post its results here.

Thank you for your help. I apologize for being tardy in your request.

I realized that I did not understand the instructions on the website and accidentally prepared the files incorrectly.

So I am restoring the entire computer disk.

I will prepare a new set of files for your analysis.

Again, my thanks for your assistance.

Xilolee,

Thank you for your help.

I have now completed all the work necessary for your analysis.

I prepared a new set of files for your analysis.

Here is what I did:

0) I Restored the complete computer and re-ran the WSUS ONLINE UPDATES VERSION 10.9.1
1) I Created new System Readiness Tools and made new CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log files.
2) I Exported the CBS registry and created a NEW Register Hive Files.reg which I renamed CBS_Registry_Export.reg
3) I have included the CBS.log file.
4) I then executed the SFCFix.exe file to create a SFCFix.txt file with the results.

For the record, after redoing the WSUS ONLINE UPDATES the program found a series of updates.
three were Security Updates for the Vista
KB3167679
KB3216775
KB4014793 .. all which could not be installed.

There also were three updates for the Microsoft Office files .. ALL INSTALLED WITHOUT ERROR.

CheckSUR.log
CheckSUR.persist.log
CBS_Registry_Export.reg
CBS.log
SFCFix.txt
README.txt

All these files have been zipped into a new Zip file that I have stored on my server under the link

Apparently no solutions were offered from within the group.

So I had to solve the problem myself. Re-read my Microsoft Resources Books for the Vista. Error 80070490 apparently is associated with the inability for the upgrades to pass a digital security within the SP2 version for Vista.

Solution: First I made sure that there were no viruses, malware, spyware, etc. on the computer. The problem rested in the Registry. So I used two tools to clean the register. SmartPCFix.com ($5.99 for 7 days, however, they will set up a auto payment in PayPAL for a $59.99/yr charge. Remember to go into your PayPAL account and cancel this auto setup.) and Tweaking.com Windows Repair (Free asked for Donation.)

I found over 1100 registry problems and used SmartPCFix to clean up the registry and most important re-register all the dll's in the computer (this is very important).

I then ran WSUS Online Update to reload and validate the WSUS system. The next to last version is 10.9.1. This will check for the latest updates remembering that Vista discontinued support for Vista on 4-11-17 and will discontinued Office support in the of this 2017. Warning: Please do not check the RECALL. Just bypass it.

This produced 165 updates (Security, Office, Framework, etc.) which I installed without a hitch.

Mission accomplished and the unit works at lightened speed.
