Hello,

I inherited a Windows 2008R2 SP1 server which refuses to update. This is what happens when trying to run Windows Update:
  1. Main Windows Update screen in Control Panel says updates have never been installed (which isn't true since the history states otherwise). There is the red 'x' shield, and 'Check for updates' button.
  2. When clicking the button, the yellow shield with exclamation comes up saying that the new Windows Update Software needs to be installed, with an 'Install now' button.
  3. 'Downloading and Installing Updates' appears for about 1-2 seconds then the Code 80073712 error comes up:
000097.jpg

This is what I've done so far:

  1. Ran SFCFix.exe - no errors returned
  2. Ran chkdsk - no errors/corruptions found
  3. Ran sfcscannow - no errors found
  4. Tried to re-install SP1, Windows says it's already installed.
  5. Ran KB947821 - no improvement
  6. I thought this might be related to IE8 still being installed, but it won't let me upgrade it. Whenever I try to upgrade IE, it says it needs to download other updates, but they won't install. I tried removing (or disabling) IE and upgrading, still no help.

I am seeing a component store corrupt error in the CBS.log (attached), but I'm not sure where to go from here to resolve this.
2017-07-19 12:27:44, Info CBS Failed to resolve execution update. [HRESULT = 0x80073712 - ERROR_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT]

Also, the CheckSUR.log doesn't have any errors, although there is something under the summary. Here are the contents of CheckSUR.log:

OK, let's try to fix this.
Code:
2017-07-19 12:21:39, Error CSI 00000014@2017/7/19:17:21:39.548 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(11690): Store corruption detected in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::CheckFamilyIndexForDeadWinnerComponent expression: (null)

Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

OK, check for Windows Updates and let me know if it finds any to install.

Unfortunately, same behavior as before:

1.) Starts with the red 'x' shield, saying that updates have never been installed and to check for updates.
2.) After checking, it comes up with the exclamation point yellow shield saying it needs to install new Windows Update software.
3.) Then after clicking 'Install Now', it comes back with the same error as before: Code 80073712, Windows could not search for new updates.

Yup, no problem. Please do the following.

Step#1 - Run Windows Repairs
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open.
7. Click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
8. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
9. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

04 - Register System Files
05 - Repair WMI
15 - Repair Proxy Settings
17 - Repair Windows Updates

10. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

11. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

Still doing the same as mentioned in my previous post even after running the repairs. Actually, I did it twice just to make sure.

Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Please do the following.
