WinMonthly Rollup Udates fail - Win 7 64b Ult SP1

OS - Win 7 64 bit Ult SP1 fully updated except for win 10 telemetry patches. The system boots in UEFI mode with SecureBoot off. Updates were working fine until March 2018 when the Monthly Rollup Patches failed each month. (error80073712) The defender patches and Office Patches all still work. I have run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and it says that Windows Update had problems and they are repaired. But the problem remains.
I have run CHKDSK /F on the boot/System drive and it reported no problems. Memtest was run for 48 hours without any errors.

I have followed each step in the instructions at the top of this forum and my CBS log folder is 43 mb so it is here Dropbox - Sysnative - Simplify your life

When I ran DISM /Cleanup-Image /Scanhealth the last time it listed six entries that could not be fixed

Please note that Avast free was accidentally installed on this machine as bloatware in another package, but was uninstalled and then I ran the avastclear application in safe mode to eradicate it. THe antivirus on my machine is MSSE 4.10.209 and Malwarebytes Premium 3.6.1 - No malware or infections reported by either on complete scans.

Please advise what to do next? Many thanks for your kind attention and assistance!

I read the announcement about just a few experts to answer lots of problems, and would be most grateful for your help. I really don't want to have to reinstall windows and all the applications on this machine just to get it to update properly. I have not done anything more to try to troubleshoot the problem since I first posted, so the logs should still be current. Let me know what else you need from me -- thanks
 
Retrieve Components Hive
 1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to a file sharing service and just provide the link here.
 
Thank you for your response - here's the first BIG problems: although I can navigate to see the C:\Windows\System32\Config\Components file I cannot copy it. It does not matter whether I log on as myself (in Administrators group) or as Administrator or in safe mode. When I right click and look at properties and advanced it says it cannot show the current owner (this is as Administrator in safe mode) and asks if I want to change the current owner.

I know that the proper current owner of this file ought to be SYSTEM, but that does not show on this machine. I have several Macrium Image backups of this system, so I am happy to try whatever permission changes or ownership changes you require - but I need your guidance before stumbling on. Thanks
 
Please try the following:


  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
     You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Filedropper or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.
 
I have followed your recommendations with RegBack - however - when I explore the new backup as recommended I find only 5 files in the config folder : DEFAULT SAM SECURITY SOFTWARE SYSTEM

COMPONENTS does not appear in the backup - I suspect because there is some permissions issue with that file that is not allowing any user to copy or back it up. I am willing to try whatever you suggest to take ownership of COMPONENTS so that at least I can send you a zipped copy. If I were to create a System Restore Point for C:\, then take ownership of COMPONENTS, zip it and send and then do a System Restore of C: would that effecively allow me to get the file to you and then leave it back in whatever state it was before I took ownership? I really appreciate you helping me through this mess, man!
 
Step#1 - ChkDsk Scan
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.
3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk and then press enter.
6. Chkdsk will start to run. Please allow it to finish.
7. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop. If it's already downloaded to your desktop, just skip this step.
8. Right-click this file and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

I did create a cloned image of this disc using Macrium last night- So if you think it wold be useful, perhaps I can zip the COMPONENTS from this cloned disc - using another machine another machine -- and then upload that zip to you.
 
Some errors have been detected:


Step#1 - ChkDsk Repair
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk /R and then press enter. Note: There is a space after the command chkdsk and before the forward slash
6. You will get a prompt telling you chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use. Answer Y and hit enter to schedule the run at next boot.
7. Reboot your computer and chkdsk will run. Let it complete please.
8. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop.
9. Right-click ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

I was NOT able to copy the components hive - I did clone the drive to an identical ssd and then connected to a different machine so I could take ownership of components and zip it for you. Even after having run the chkdsk /r as you instructed the security tab does not appear when you right click the config folder or components hive - thus I am not able to verify or change permissions on either the directory or components on the affected machine

Unfortunately, your components hive is damaged beyond repair. You could try upgrading to Win10, but judging by the condition of your hive, my recommendation would be a repair install of Windows 7.
 
Thank you for all the trouble you went through trying to help me. I was pretty afraid this would end up the case. Now I'll have to dig up my notes on repair installs for Win 7 ( haven't done one of those in a few years!) - but at least I know what's needed now and can quit wasting time on a hopeless attempt to fix.
