Windows Vista SP2 Update Fail (KB948465) Error 80070490

Can someone please help me? My problem started with a memory leak in svchost.exe. I've got this problem down to Windows Update after applying some hotfixes. Windows Update was also failing, so I uninstalled SP2, but now I can not reinstall it without getting error 80070490. I've attached the CBS log files. Thanks for your help!

  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command SFC /SCANNOW
  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with the rest of the steps.

Convert CBS.log to CBS.txt

    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button => Inside the search box copy and paste the following command:
    Code:
    cmd /c copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  2. Press Enter
  3. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please upload CBS.txt to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to you next post please upload via Dropbox or ge.tt

I guess I needed to run SFC one more time. It fixed it! I was able to do the update now. Thanks!

Perfect, thanks.

There are no corruptions listed there. But SFC did repair a few files can you please do another scan with SURT (System Update Readiness Tool) and post the contents of:
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Please click on start -> Control panel -> System -> What version is listed under Windows Edition? does it say SP2? If doesn't please run the installation again an post a copy the follow log once it is done.

Windows Update Log

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Click on Run Inside the run box copy and paste the following command
    cmd /c copy %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\WindowsUpdate.txt"
  3. Please go to your desktop and attach WindowsUpdate.txt to your next post

Hello again,

What we will try and do is to clear out the downloads folder

Software Distribution rename

  • Click Start -> Type in CMD in the search -> Right click on cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator
  • Entre in the following commands:
    net stop wuauserv
    ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
    ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DS.bak
    net start wuauserv

Once completed please try and run windows update again.

That's a shame, just not much is standing out as it what is causing this.

Still no clear reason as to why this is happening.

Can you please try and update again and when it fails do the following:

Event Log Viewer

  1. Please download VEW.exe from Here and save it to your desktop.
  2. Go to your desktop and right click on VEW.exe and choose Run as Administrator
  3. Once open set the following settings
    • 'Select log to query'
      1. Tick Application
      2. Tick System
    • 'Select Type to list'
      1. Tick Critical
      2. Tick Error
      3. Tick Information
      4. Tick Warning
    • 'Number or date events'
      1. Tick Number of Events and set it to 20
  4. Click on Run
  5. Once completed a notepad file will open. Please copy and paste the contents of VEW.txt back into this thread.
