This machine is running Vista home premium 32 bit. Windows was up to date on 7/1. When I went to check for updates on 8/30, windows update went nowhere-- just kept checking --- even after 5 or more hours. I ran sfc /scannow and got a clean result. I have downloaded SURT for 32 bit Vista. I started it at 9 AM this morning; It is 11PM and the standalone installer is still checking for updates. I await your response; I have worked with Aura, Brian Drab, and zcomputerwhiz.

I will try to download SFCFIX

I downloaded SFCFix , stored it on my desktop, and then ran it. The log shows no corruptions. The sfcfix.txt file is below:

SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2016-08-31 23:10:07.273
Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - x86
Not using a script file.

Hi Dave,

Do you still need assistance with this issue?

Hi Aura,

Thanks for the response. I tried to down load each in succession, but each ran for at least 1 hour with no conclusion. I stopped each one . I ran windows update repair from tweaking.com. I tried to frerun SURT--- spin spin spin --- could not casncel -- had to stop process using task manager. My windows update now shows I have never tried to update. Now when I try to download each kb, I get the thank yoi for downloading but no run or save command. I reran sfc /scannow and there were no integrity violations. I need some help. I hope running the windows update repair from tweaking.com did not screw things up.

Could you please send an email to [censored] when you reply? I thought I had my settins to hget an emai each reply, but I guess I did it incorrectly.

Can you try leaving your computer on overnight and make it look for Windows Update, and then tell me in the morning if it found any?

It has now been running for 8 hours. the svchost.exe that is associated with the wuauserv is using 716,500 kb.

What is next given that I cannot currently download and install any of the kb's that go with the Brian Drab post on windows update using a lot of memory?

Thanks for helping; I am letting windows update keep running--- all night if you want to do that or if I have not heard from you.

Please leave it all night, this way we'll make sure it's not just a time thing, like I see often. Also, I'll need to investigate something on my end as I've heard reports of Windows 7 users reporting the same issue as yours, and from what the Microsoft Techs told them it's an issue on their end (Microsoft).

Alright, let's start with a SFC scan.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

And I'm guessing that SURT is still checking for updates?

I was not running SURT when I was running windows updates. I had a day or so ago and it spent a long time checking for updates and I closed it ( through task manager) is there something you want me to do regarding SURT?

In trying the possible solution you suggested, When I try each, I get the Thank you for downloading but no run or save option. I think this got messed up when iI ran the tweaking.com windows update repair. What can I do?

You should be able to click on a "Click here if your download doesn't start" button on the "Thank you for downloading" page.
