Windows Update Throws Error Code 80070490 on 3 KBs

Over the past few months, I've tried several fixes found online, but to no avail.
KB2871997, 2922229, and 2726535 all Fail with Error Code 80070490, even when attempted individually.
Using Windows 7 Home Premium SP 1 with all updates except those three.
Relying on Microsoft Security Essentials (fully updated) for malware protection.

Several repair "algorithms" have ended up with reinstall completely, starting from scratch, but I hope one of you geniuses (genii is more like it, I guess :-) can help me avoid such drastic measures.

Complicating things is that the computer came with Vista and the free HP Upgrade to Win 7, which took so many iterations to get installed, that I was on the verge of sending the whole lot back to HP. It finally took, and has been fine (well, about as fine as one has learned to expect from MS), except for this Update problem.

Hoping for some Sysnative rescue, and thanking you in advance for whatever you can do to help.

God bless!
Jack

Hello Jack and welcome to Sysnative :),

Download and run System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

  • Please go Here and download the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). Save this file to your desktop
  • Go to your desktop and run KB947821
  • When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Go,
Thanks for responding. Sorry for the long timelag in responding. Following your instructions turned out to be quite arduous: It took many attempts to install KB947821.

Now that I've gone through all that, I just noticed I haven't run SFCFix yet. Will do this in the morning (Texas time) and get back to you tomorrow.
God bless!
Jack

Hi Jack,

Looks like there is a large number of corruptions there. Lets see if SFCFix can fix these corruptions :)

Thanks for still being there.

Now that I've read the instructions ;-) I still have some pretty hairy files. I don't imagine you want 13,000+ lines of copy pasted here, so, I've zipped my SFCFix.txt.

After SFCFix fixed almost 11,000 of the 13,000+ problems, I rebooted into Safe Mode. (So that the SURT could run unimpeded.) Then I re-ran SURT, only to find that it can't be done in Safe Mode, so after another reboot to Normal, I did it again, which gave us the new files that I've included in the RecentCBS.zip.

Hope all this gets us on our way to a solution.

Thanks again and God bless!
Jack

Hi Jack :)

Did you run SURT after SFCFix? The time stamp for SURT was before SFCFix:

Code:
Checking System Update Readiness.
Binary Version 6.1.7601.22471
Package Version 25.0
[B]2014-08-02 15:33[/B]
Code:
SFCFix version 2.3.0.0 by niemiro.
Start time: [B]2014-08-02 18:38:48.385[/B]
Not using a script file.

Can you please run SURT again for me please? and upload the files?

Once SURT has completed its scan please continue

SFCFix Collect CBS

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Successfully processed all directives.
SFCFix version 2.3.0.0 by niemiro has completed.
Currently storing 581 datablocks.

and here is the just-prior result of my re-do of SURT:
View attachment NewCheckSURs.zip
the SUR files are still pretty huge, so I zipped the two into that attachment.

Each of these SURT runs is taking over an hour. Is that normal??

Thanks again so much for being there and being so helpful.

God bless you!
Jack

as I should have sent it in the just-previous reply.

One of these days I might learn to read the instructions all the way through :-(
(But that would indeed be a new trick for a very old dog, so I'm not responsible for any damage that might occur were you to hold your breath waiting. ;-)

Thanks again for taking me under your wing on this.
God bless!

Hi Jack :)

There looks to be a large amount of Registry corruptions inside your log. Its time to have a look at the Registry Hives

Alex,
Wow! Looks like we've bitten off quite a mess. Work calls, and I'll have to be away from this computer for several days, so I guess we'll have to pick it up at later date.

Before resuming, I will attempt to run a good registry cleaner, and maybe we can get things moving again.

Thanks so much for all your help here. Sorry if cutting off early frustrates your obviously helpful nature, but hopefully we can get it working in future.

Thanks again, and of course ...
God bless you!
(There is a US$25 donation on its way.)

Hi Jack,

I wouldn't recommend a registry cleaner to try and solve this issue, a lot of the time registry cleaners cause this sort of corruption in the first place.

When ever you get back I will be here to pick up where we left off.

Thanks for giving the forum a donation :)

Alex
