[SOLVED] Windows update stuck on eternal reboot

Hi all,

I am having some issues with my windows update, i am running windows 7 64bit, and the problems started with the upgrade offer for windows 10.
I reserved my copy, and chose to "upgrade later", this meant i was being constantly harrassed by windows to complete the installation. I do not want to upgrade just yet, so i decided to take some steps to rectify this problem, particularly because i recieved a toast that there were new updates avaliable for my (current) OS, however these could not be installed because "windows update needs to reboot to complete another installation".
I followed various (pretty non invasive) tutorials on how to revert to the previous state of windows update, but it seems i managed to mess something up along the way. I am guessing it is just a register entry which tries to install windows 10(or an actual update) on startup, but it cannot find the files to do so and the entry remains. Apparantly i know just enough to be dangerous :)

things i have tried/messed up:
* removed the windows 10 installation files (disk cleanup, tick "clean system files", went from there)
* reset windows update components
* uninstalled KB 2952664 KB 3035583
* downloaded latest version of update manager
* ran the fixit ( multiple times) sometimes it fixed some errors and found an unfixable error (error 0x80070490)
=> followed the suggested fix from miscrosoft, SFC / scannow gave no errors, update readiness tool fixed nothing.

* made a system restore point, installed the
tweaking.com windows repair utility
tried their windows update fix, got no luck, reverted back to restore point. (im listing this because i am unsure just how much is restored with a restore point, the spoiler tags are in case its considered advertisement)

tl dr: my windows update wants to reboot to finish an update, yet when i do so nothing is installed, and it still asks me to reboot.

Time for analysis!

Thank you in advance for any effort spent on me :)

Re: Logfile submission from Shard

Addendum:
I tried a sollution posted elsewhere on this forum:
Run Regedit, and navigate to the following key:
Code:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update
Expand that key, and look for a subkey called RebootRequired. If found, right-click on it, choose Export, save on the Desktop as Reboot.reg, then delete that key (the RebootRequired one, not the parent Auto Update one). Restart the computer, and check for updates.

... Did not work.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. If you are still in need of assistance, please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Forgot to mention that one, tried it a few times before.
Ill run it again and post the logs

Thanks. Sorry to have you repeat steps but I'm just gathering needed information. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks! Please do the following.

Step#1 - Export WU Info

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file WU (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  7. Please zip and attach this file.

Thanks. Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Since you have reset Windows Update components previously I would suggest that you reboot your machine once (if you haven't already) and then check for updates and let it run for quite some time. I have seen it run for hours while it repopulates the Windows Update store with updates. Then we can go from there once we know what is going on.
