Please do the following.

Step#1 - Export CBS hive

  • Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (.).
  • Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload to Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Unfortunately, the file you have sent me is in a .reg format which I am unable to use.

Please follow the instructions again from post #4 and ensuring when exporting the hive the save as type is changed to Registry Hive Files (.)

Install Update with DISM
  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be IE11-Windows6.1-KB4040685-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Keep the defaults and click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\IE11-Windows6.1-KB4040685-x64.cab\IE11-Windows6.1-KB4040685-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
    Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
    Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

The dism install completed successfully for KB4041678 and prompted for a restart. Unfortunately, I cannot reboot this server until next Sunday, January 26, 2020, at 1 AM EST. I will run SURT then and reply with the CheckSUR.log ...not unless it is ok to run the SURT without the restart?

Yes, that may be likely. If you are happy to wait until you can reboot the machine that's absolutely fine.

Once it has reboot, run SURT again and post the CheckSUR log.
