Hi Sysadmin Gurus,

Have a problem with my system... cannot install anymore Windows Updates

First Symptoms (May be totally unrelated, only listing for completeness sake): I had not restarted my computer for several months. When I restarted, it was in an infinite power loop. To repair this I had done the instructions at P67A-UD4-B3 stuck in reboot cycle to reset my BIOS. After my BIOS was reset, Windows has no more problems and restarted normally many times. So the BIOS problem is solved

Second symptoms (see screen) the dreaded "Restart your computer to install important updates"... tried several self-fixes, including nuking the %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution directory (I did not make a copy before nuking it) and the Windows Update Fixer.

Upload of CBS to follow shortly from your instructions

UPDATE: SFCFix.exe finished uploading CBS folder, but did not attach to this thread... let me know if you want me to do anything else

Thanks in advance,

~ B

You have to restart your computer to install more updates, As far as I know there is no way around it.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please do the following.

1. Click your start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter.
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /s >1.txt && notepad 1.txt

4. Notepad will open showing the WU info. Can you copy and paste this into your next reply?

Thanks. Please do the following.

It doesn't appear that you ran the correct script.

Code:
Using .txt script file at C:\Users\brian\Desktop\[B]SFCFixScript.txt [/B][1]

You used a script named SFCFixScript.txt. Not sure where you got that but the one I attached was named SFCScript.txt.

Don't know either it was on my desktop

Done

OK, good. Reboot your machine and let me know if your issue is now resolved.

Sequence of Events

1. BEFORE rebooting I clicked "Check for Updates" in "Windows Update" window, which was allowed. The "Download Windows 10" was showing. It was checking and neverending.

2. I rebooted multiple times, nothing happened and still had the "Restart Computer to install important updates"

3. Instead of a soft reboot, I did a total shutdown. Before shutting down, Windows then installed 7 updates (unlike the restart -- restart did nothing, no updates installing)

4. When Windows restarted, the Windows logo appeared for a split second, and it was installing some update

5. After entering windows, the "Restart Computer to install important updates" is still visible

6. On multiple hard reboots / soft reboots, the issue does not go away

Issue still exists, cannot update, although 7+ updates have installed

Thanks,

~ B

I'm going to turn in for the evening. But if updates are found to install, please install them and then reboot afterwards. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks Brian

No updates were found to install other than the Windows 10 Update

Will try installing SQL Server and other things tomorrow to see if its cleared

I will need to upgrade to Windows 10 to install the software

Is there any problem with this that you can see?

Thanks again for the fixes and your time
