Hi guys, for the past two weeks I have found a major problem with my computer. My windows update on my is in a constant loop! Ever since downloading the new patches on Patch Tuesday, my computer will download them, try to install them after restarting, and every single time my computer gets stuck at 12%. It will reboot again, and again get stuck at 12%. It finally gave up and I was able to run diagnostics and found that I'm either missing or have a corrupted SFC Output.

I've seen a few other posts on this, and was just curious how to fix it (I paid attention to the warning that each SFC fix can be unique to that user)
The uploader keeps saying that I am downloading my CBS log and NOT uploading it because it is too large! Pease let me know how to fix this so we can get to the real issue. By the way, I am running Windows 8 64-bit. Thanks guys!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

DISM

  1. Press the Windows Key on your keyboard and X to open up the Power User Tasks Menu
  2. Click (or tap) Command Prompt (admin)
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Wait for this to finish before you continue (approximately 15-20 minutes)

Export CBS folder

  1. Press the Windows Key + E to open Windows Explorer
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this new file to your next post (or upload it to a free file sharing site such as SendSpace - Free large file hosting. Send big files the easy way!)

Ok thanks for the tip!

To start, the command DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth brought up the following error message:
Error:87
The restorehealth option is not recognized in this context. For more information, refer to the help.

I don't know if something is wrong with my computer in that area as well but that's what came up!

I couldn't attach my CBS log so I uploaded to sendspace as requested and the link can be found here:
Download CBS.zip from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Hopefully this helps. This computer error has be baffled right now.
Let me know if I need to submit anything else!
Thanks

Hi,

Sorry about the DISM command, that's for Windows 8 only, not for Windows 7.

This is strange. SURT is reporting no errors, and I can't see anything in the CBS logs that stands out to me.

Let's try getting another log. Please can you find the file C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log, zip it up, and attach it to your next post.

I figured out what was wrong! This is the instructions I received on another site and what fixed my computer (For future reference) Thank you for the support and help though!

Your problem updating is most likely the result of having installed two anti-virus products, AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials. However, the solution may not be simply to remove one, as by installing a second anti-virus product with the first still in place can mean that both installations are damaged. You could also have malware infestations, because both are watching each other, rather than being focused on preventing malware. The freezes are a symptom of too much going on, brought about in part by having installed two anti-virus products.

All the procedures I am asking you to carry out are in to be carried out in normal mode. You do not need to use safe mode with networking. If your computer is a laptop it needs to be connected to a mains electricity supply.

Please start to resolve the problem by taking control of the Windows update process. A lot of problems arise from setting Windows Update to automatically update. Please select Start, All Programs, Windows Update, Change Settings. Under Important Updates is a box showing the current setting. Click on the Arrow down to the right and change the selection to “Check for Updates but let me choose whether to download and install them” and click on OK.

Next please remove both anti-virus products using the removal tools below.

AVG Removal Tool

Microsoft Security Essentials removal tool:

Restart the computer when removal of both anti-virus products is complete. Run Disk CleanUp or cCleaner to remove temporary files. Download and install Malwarebytes (freeware version for home users only -not the Trial version), update definitions and run a full scan.

Download and run ADWCleaner:

Restart your computer and download and install either AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials. Update definitions and run a complete scan.

You have had a number of failed update attempts and the error codes changed from one attempt to the next. For this reason I cannot be certain that the failures and responses to freezes have not resulted in system damage. My suspicion is that, like many others facing this situation, you have pressed the power on / off button to resolve freezes. This is not the best way to resolve a freeze.

Please select Start, All Programs, Windows Update, Check for Updates. Check the box before one of the updates you want to install (you may need to uncheck boxes so that only one is checked) , click on Install and click again on Install in the next window and the process of installing starts. You should let the process proceed without interruption. Multi-tasking at the time updating is in progress is unwise. The progress window will tell you what is going on. You need to be patient. Restart the computer, if prompted.

If the installation is successful repeat the procedure, but check all boxes and install. You will need to restart the computer and you should not delay restarting.

If the first installation fails please tell me what the failure code is? To ascertain the failure code you select Start, All Programs, Windows Update, View Update History, double click the failed update and post the Failure Code and Update reference number

Thanks for posting back your solution! :)
