Hi, there,

I have a problem with these two updates to Windows 7 Pro: KB3061518 & KB3022345. 11 other Windows updates installed fine this Tuesday, 5/12. These two 'Fail' & produce an 'unknown error 80070490' in Windows Update. I tried WU several times with the same result.

I tried downloading the updates but I cannot find a Win7 version of KB3022345 & the downloaded install file for KB3061518 still fails.

This is on an HP Compaq 6005 Pro with an AMD 765 chipset & B59 CPU.

I bought this as a refurb at the beginning of April & upgraded the RAM to 12GB from 4GB, the CPU to an AMD B59 from a B24, storage to a Samsung 250GB SSD (boot) & a Seagate 1000GB SSHD (data) from an older Seagate 750GB HD.

In the middle of April, I added Acronis TrueImage 2015, made an emergency Acronis Boot DVD & while testing the DVD to see if it would boot the PC I got a message that there was no operating system installed. The PC would not boot after that. I still don't know what caused this problem.

After I put the original hardware, RAM, CPU & HD, back in the machine & it booted fine, so I tested one new piece at a time & concluded that I had a software, operating system or virus problem & it was not hardware related. But, I had to take it to a computer repair shop to fix the boot problem, not having any expertise with Windows boot repair myself.

Since then I scanned with MalwareBytes, SuperAntiSpyware, Hitman Pro, adwcleaner, & Avast. The PC's clean but I still have several problems that I am trying to work through:

I can use the button in System Protection to make manual Restore Points and Windows & utility software can make restore points but System Restore itself will not run in Windows or Windows Safe Mode. I can boot to a Windows Repair CD or a Windows 7 install DVD to run System Restore from there & it's the only way to even see saved Restore Points but I have used System Restore with this method & it works.

Action Center won't open even though it was sending me messages about not having anti-virus software even though my Avast Pro was running fine. I was able to get Action Center to stop the messages but still can't open Action Center itself.

The Winbrand.dll file got corrupted & I was able to fix that after much knashing of teeth. A Windows PC is pretty helpless when Winbrand won't load.

I got Task Scheduler back running. It was switched off & I didn't have permission to turn it on.

I use the Windows Event Viewer & I still have 2 boot errors but I used to have 41 of them.

WMI still has errors with certain objects according to WMIDiag.

But, here I am with this Windows Update problem:

I ran the Windows Fixit from the 'How do I reset Windows Update Components' page.

I ran the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 from MicroSoft.

I deleted the WU cache files in the %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\ folder

I ran SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated prompt & got 'no intergrity violation'.

I found your SFCFix & ran it.

I am unable to upload a copy of my CBS folder since even zipped it is 55MB & I am on a DSL 2mb up line.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. This may take a couple passes to get fixed. Please do the following to start.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - Fix Corrupt/Missing Files
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Please download the attached file, Packs.zip and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
  3. Tick the box labelled Show extracted files when complete then click Extract
  4. A window will open showing two folders, Manifests and Packages
  5. Ignore the Manifests folder for this one.
  6. Open the Packages folder and copy the files into the following folder. If the Packages folder doesn't exist within Servicing you will need to create it.
    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Servicing\Packages
  7. Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
  8. When the SURT finishes installing, zip up and attach the following log file:
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Items for your next post
1. SFCFix log
2. CheckSur log

Thanks, again !

One left to fix. We need to do some inquiries of the registry first. Please do the following.

Step#1 - FRST Registry Search
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.

amd64_microsoft-windows-r..s-regkeys-component_31bf3856ad364e35_0.0.0.0_none_af86bbd50856d9fd;Package_1_for_KB3036493~31bf3856ad344e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0

Search.JPG

4. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please copy and paste the contents in your next reply. If for some reason notepad doesn't open the file should be
saved on your desktop named Search.txt.

I also ran a scan with the program which produced two other text files, FRST.txt & Addition.txt, if you are interested. Want to take a look ?

Many thanks, Jeff

No need for the other two files. I got what I needed. Please do the following.

  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Excellent. Please do the following.

Step#1 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hi, I'm back again !

After Brian fixed my Windows Update problem I proceeded to try & find the cures to some of the other problems this PC has, namely,

1. Being unable to run System Restore (except from a Windows repair CD or install DVD, so restore points actually are being made).

2. Being unable to run Action Center (although I am able to get messages from it in the Tray area).

3. Not having Parental Controls availiable (which I don't care about).

4. Unable to launch Windows Troubleshooting.

5. Windows Performance Index is unable to be updated with an error involving the video driver preventing completion of the task.

During Brian's fix process he had me use FarBar FRST64 to search the registry at one point.

I also went back & did a FRST Scan on my own. The FRST logs pointed towards a WMI problem causing my System Restore problem. So, I searched the web on 'WMI repair'.

Then I found tweakers.com & their Windows Repair 3.2.0. I ran this to fix WMI.

As part of the recommended sequence from a Windows clean Safe Mode boot (that begins with chkdsk & ends with the running of the Windows Repair tool), is when I first saw SFC /scannow throw the error 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operations' (running SFC is #2 in the sequence).

All seemed well after the repair. I have System Restore from inside Windows, back.

Yesterday, I ran Windows Update & got the latest Windows Defender definitions file & two more optional updates & all went well.

I also upgraded my Firefox to version 38.

Last night Firefox seemed to have a problem for a few minutes but I was able to quit & then start FF back up without a reboot of the PC.

Then, today, Windows Update said it had never been run, there is no update history to look at & trying to check for Windows updates searches endlessly with no result.

I tried SFC /scannow from an Administrative CMD prompt & got the 'Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operations' error; it appears before any other SFC text is displayed at the prompt (not after some percentage has been done for example).

I don't know what, if any, of the things I mention above has caused the corruption. I also don't know what the other two Windows updates were since the history is gone.

Here are my log files,

CBS.log

CheckSUR.log

CheckSUR.persist.log

SFCFix.txt

I don't know about your end, but I downloaded the LogBot zip file & couldn't open it here, on my end. So, I zipped the CBS.log & have included it as an attachment to this post.

Thanks for the details and welcome back. Looks like registry corruption from the log. Before we attempt to fix anything let's check your disk for corruption. Please do the following.

ChkDsk Scan
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.
ElevateCommandPrompt.JPG

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk and then press enter.
6. Chkdsk will start to run. Please allow it to finish. You will know it is running when you see text as follows.
Chkdsk.JPG

7. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop. If it's already downloaded to your desktop, just skip this step.
8. Right-click this file and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

There you go. Running Chkdsk was my first step.

Thank you. Now I need to retrieve your COMPONENTS and SOFTWARE hive. Please do the following.

Retrieve Components/Software Hives

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS and another named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS and SOFTWARE files to your Desktop.
  • Now select both of these files on the desktop and right click on and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.
