Hello,

I today found this forum and I really hope you guys can help me out as I am really desperate right now.
I have the following problem:

We have a Windows 7 Professional PC which crashes from time to time. When I started looking into the problem, I realized that this PC never made any Windows Updates. When trying to prompt the updates manually I received the error code 80070246. I started to read all over the internet and already tried the following without any success:

- Microsoft Fixit Tool
- SFC scannow command (won't work because of Windows ressource protection, even in safe mode!)
- System Update Readiness Tool

Then I found your forum and downloaded the SFCFix which is now running since aproximately 3 hours!! It still shows:

"Processing directive 1 of 1 (AutoAnalysis), Checking store directories..."

I read that it should take 15 minutes or so only, right? So, something is really wrong and I have to find out what. Usually I would do a clean new Windows install, but this is a small Server PC running in my parents office and I really do not want to have the trouble of reinstalling all software my parents need for their work and stuff. So I would be SO THANKFUL if you guys could somehow give me some support what to do next. Should I stop the SFCFix and upload the CBS file next? Would that help you analyzing the problem?

This is the system data:
Windows 7 Professional
AMD FX 8120 Eight Core Processor 3.10 GHz
16 GB RAM
if you need more info or details, please let me know.

Best regards,
Daniel

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFC Scan
I know you have done this previously and that it gives you an error. That's OK. I still need a current log so please follow the instructions. Thanks.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue. Even if you get an error, this is considered finished.

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Hello Brian,

thank you for the reply.
Attached please find the requested txt file. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me...

Cheers,
Daniel

You were unable to attach the file to this forum post because it wasn't zipped. To zip a file you can right-click on it and select Send To Compressed (zipped folder). It will create a zip file that you can attach (as long as it's under around 7Mb).

Back to your issue. You have registry corruption. As a result I need one of your registry hives to look at. Please follow the instructions below.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive a message about the file being in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again
2. Right-click on the COMPONENTS hive and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.zip on your desktop.
3. The file will likely be too large to attach here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Thank you.

The identity of the following key is corrupt. We'll see if we can fix it. There's likely more corruption but I can't see it at the moment.

Hi Brian,

unfortunately the SFCFix.exe tool is still not working. It starts but does not proceed. It gets stuck at "checking directories". Please see screenshot.

I was able to install some updates meanwhile, but not all. At some point there was again a failure message. Its a new code now. Please see screenshot.

What to do now?
Thanks in advance...
