Hi,

I am currently dealing with an issue with Windows Update. I have updates that originally FAILED to be installed and now are listed as PENDING as shown below...

20150205 WinUpdateStatus.jpg

Per the instructions for posting on this forum, I've downloaded SFCFix.exe, but have not run it yet. I await (hopefully) further instructions before beginning the diagnostic process...

FYI, after an extensive search, I've tried a number of proffered solutions, but none have appeared to remedy the issue. I'm just hoping I didn't do any additional harm/damage...

Also, I have received the following error code: 0x80070057 (2015-01-15-T-10_58_05P)

Thanks in advance for any potential assistance with this issue. It is certainly appreciated :)

Unfortunately, the image above seems to have been compressed, so here is a link to a bigger, more legible version in the hope it may prove helpful: http://i57.tinypic.com/2m7tf8n.gif

Hi Go The Power,

Thanks for your reply, initial instructions and welcome to the forum :)

Below is a confirmation of the SFC /SCANNOW results (no integrity violations) and a zipped CBS.txt file (cbs.zip) for your review...

Hello again mr650319 :)

The SFC log has returned fine.

Can you please try and run these updates again, let them fail then provide the following log:

  1. Click on the Start button -> Inside the search box copy and paste the following command
    cmd /c copy %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\WindowsUpdate.txt"
  2. Please go to your desktop and attach WindowsUpdate.txt to your next post

Hi there Go The Power,

Thanks for your reply and additional instructions...

Excuse my ignorance, but how do I best go about running these updates again? Googling "how to reinstall a pending windows update" or "how to reinstall a windows update that failed" yields a confusing array of potential solutions...

Thanks again for your continuing assistance. It is certainly most appreciated :)

No worries at all.

If you launch Windows updates, by clicking on the start menu -> In the search field type in Windows Updates -> Select Windows updates -> Does it say Updates are available? or Search for updates?

Hi Go The Power,

This is what I currently see:

20150207 WindowsUpdateStatus.jpg

No updates are available except for the optional Update which is for a Western Digital External USB drive...not related, I believe, to the issue at hand. As for "Search for Updates", I don't see this option anywhere. However, I did choose and execute the option, "Check for Updates", and, upon completion, Windows Update informed me, as shown above in the screen capture, that no updates were available (except for the same optional update).

Thanks again for your continuing assistance. It is certainly most appreciated :)

The updates in your picture showing as failed are the same two that are showing as pending.

What is interesting is there are no recent errors for these two pending upgrades:

They are both marked as pending install though.

Is this a PC or laptop? Do you use sort of hibernation mode?

Lets have a look at the pending files.

Please navigate to C:\Windows\winsxs and copy any files with a similar name to pending.xml (e.g. pending.xml, pending.xml.bad, pending.xml_dfsadf78 etc.) to your folder on the Desktop [there may not be any, just if there are]. Then zip up this folder and attach it to your next post.

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following command
    REG LOAD HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS
    REG QUERY HKLM\COMPONENTS >1&& notepad 1

  4. Please wait for this to Finish before continuing with rest of the steps.
Please also export the following registry keys, add them into a zip and attach to this post:

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file Update (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Once done please upload this file via Dropbox or One Drive

Hi Go The Power,

Thanks for your latest reply...

This is a PC running Windows 7 Pro SP1. I've never used Hibernation/Sleep. The only power configuration adjustment is to turn off the monitors after being idle for 15 minutes...

I've searched the C:\Windows\winsxs folder for anything with "Pending" in the filename. The two results returned were not XML files as shown below...

20150209 winsxs_pendingSearch.jpg

Please let me know if you want me to zip and attach these in my next reply...

Also, I've gathered the Registry info you've requested and attached the zip files below...

Thanks again for your continuing assistance. It is definitely most appreciated :)

It doesn't look like anything is currently pending to be installed. If there was we would expect to see some evidence in these logs. Also chances are SFC would not of ran if there was a pending update that required a restart.

I think this can be ignored :) As long as Windows Updates works when you do a search I think your good to go :)

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply. As it turns out, I just ran Microsoft's latest round of updates (19 updates). Windows Update informs me all were installed successfully...

FYI, below please find a screen capture of the Windows Update History. I've noted again where the two "Failed/Pending" updates are in the list. They still don't show as "Successful", so I'm wondering if they are to remain pending/uninstalled on my system, thereby leaving my system potentially vulnerable...

Can you please click on the Start button -> Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall a program.
On the right hand side click on View install Updates -> Can you run a search (in the right hand corner) for KB3020388 and KB3021674.

Do you get any results?

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply. As requested, I've run the searches and the results (screenshots) are shown below:

The odd thing is both searches show the updates as "installed" when the Windows Update History lists the updates as "pending"...

Thanks again for your continuing time, efforts and assistance in this matter. It is greatly appreciated :)

Hi Matt,

Everything appears to be fine with the system :) As to why WU is still displaying these as pending is something I can not answer. I have a theory that the update was pending to be installed, the update was then installed and for some strange reason the update list didn't update. We can always clear this list if you like? But I certain that these updates are installed :)

Hi Alex,

Thanks for your reply. I am relieved to read that everything appears to be fine with the system. I understand some anomalies cannot be addressed. Your theory seems perfectly plausible. At this time, I don't think clearing the list is necessary, but I do appreciate the offer. Your certainty and confidence regarding the installation status of the two errant updates has restored my faith in the integrity of Windows Update and this system going forward...

In closing, I would like to thank you again for your time, expertise, efforts and assistance in the resolution of this matter. It is sincerely appreciated :)

All the best in your future endeavors,

Matt
