WINDOWS UPDATE NOT WORKING

Hi guys,

I use Win7 Ultimate and recently I got the problem that I cant start Windows update.

If I click on the Windows Update under Control panel on some instances nothing happens. I have to kill the application in the Task Manager. Sometimes it starts but it reports an error:

“Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running”

I have tried numerous fixes but nothing worked.

1) ATTEMPT #1 - FAILED

Click Start
Type: cmd
Right click on cmd in start menu and select 'Run as Administrator'
Type: net stop wuauserv
Hit Enter
Type: ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
Hit Enter
Type: net start wuauserv
Hit Enter
Type: exit
Hit Enter

Restart the computer
Attempt to download updates
The new folder named “softwaredistribution” is created but still I get the same error message when I start Windows Update.

2) ATTEMPT #2 – FAILED

Go to www.micorsoft.com and try to use following troubleshooter: Automatically diagnose and fix common problems with Windows update” however it failed to fix the problem. Following has been reported:

Problems installing certain updates -- Not Fixed
Check for missing or corrupt files -- Detected
Some security settings are missing or have been changed -- Fixed
Service registration is missing or corrupt -- Fixed
Problems installing recent updates -- Fixed

On internet there are mainly threads repeating the above two solutions. I was unable to find anything else. Hope that someone can help me fix the problem.

Many thanks in advance.

I have forgotten to attach the zip file of the CBS folder as requested in the instructions for the problems related to Windows Update. Here it comes.

Many thanks in advance.

This should be about 30x longer, so something isn't right on your computer. I would like you to download and install the System Update Readiness Tool please:

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [November 2013] from Official Microsoft Download Centre

Post the log when finished:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Hello Tom, thanks for replying to my question.

I have downloaded System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [November 2013] from Official Microsoft Download Centre (Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 (KB947821) [November 2013] from Official Microsoft Download Centre) however, when I tried to install it I’ve got following error message:

“Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247

I was unable to locate the log file that you requested (“C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log”). I assume it’s because I was unable to complete the installation process.

I have collected instead the whole CBS folder again and I attach it here as zip fie. Unfortunately, it seams that the file is the same as the one I posted yesterday. I run compare function and they appear 100% the same.

How to proceed from here?

I came across following forum (Windows Update does not work, Windows Standalone Update Installer stops with error 0xc8000247 (Windows 7 Home Premium on Acer Aspire 1810TZ notebook) ) where dozens of people claim that the solution proposed in the thread has solved their problem. The solution they refer could be found here:

Error Messages Appear During Windows Update, When Inserting Card or Using Live Mail | HP® Support

I have not tried proposed solution for the following reason:

- my notebook is Fujitsu not HP
- I am not using RAID on my computer but only the single HDD
- I found few posts where people claim that they could not boot their computer after installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RAID) driver.

I goggled a bit and there are few instances where people do report that they’ve encountered Windows Update problem after cloning smaller HDD to the larger one 700GB or 1TB. I did make similar move recently cloning my 600GB drive into 1TB. After the move I thought that everything was running well. I started having few issues recently such as

- Windows Update not working
- Bluetooth does not work any more and Windows can not detect presence of my internal Bluetooth device
- External USB HDD occasionally gets disconnected and than connected again for no reason which destroys my backups

Would you suggest me to try installing Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RAID) driver on my PC?
If yes, what would be the safe way to do it?
How can I check if I already have an older version of such driver on my PC? I understood that this is not the part of the standard Win 7 installation and I probably did not install it.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Kind regards.
Rakatoa

Hello Tom,

I hope you have't given up on me.
Any further suggestions?

Kind regards,
Rakatoa

Hi rakatoa, Th IRST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) driver is a general driver used across newer Intel platforms. I have seen this issue many many times before (on NON-RAID PCs), but usually on PCs running a new installation of Windows.

There is absolutely no harm in installing it, as a matter of fact I would recommend it as it may very well solve your issue. :smile9: Download it here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/co...=Intel®+Rapid+Storage+Technology+(Intel®+RST)

Please post back if this helps!

Hi Ganjeii,

Thank you very much for the reply and for the opinion. I have tried installing latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver version 12.9.0.1001 from the link you suggested however I got following message:

"The setup program ended prematurely because of the following error: This platform is not supported" Error Code: 0x4E24 (20004)

I found a post related to the same problem but for the Toshiba notebook where someone suggested installing first some older IRST driver version 9.6 and than installing the new one.

Re: Unable to install Intel Rapid Storage Technolo... - TOSHIBA FORUMS

I managed to find IRST driver ver_9.6 at the following location: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=15251

After downloading and installing it the problem of Windows Update not working was resolved!!! So it worked!!!

After that I wanted to upgrade to the newest IRST driver ver_12.9.0.1001 but I failed. I first tried simply executing SetupRST.exe file that I downloaded from the Intel website but I got the same message that my platform is not supported.

I have tried going to Device Manager and tried to perform the check for the latest driver by doing the right click on the item “Intel ICHM-E/M SATA AHCI Controller” and letting Windows automatically search for the newest driver.

Windows returned the message that my IRST driver is up to date.

The latest Intel IRST driver is ver_12.9 while driver ver_9.6 was the first driver that Intel released that supports 4K sector disks.

Do you have any suggestion how can I update to the newest IRST driver?

I am not sure but after reading carefully the text on the Intel software page I have a feeling that only RAID controllers require newest IRST driver. It might be that AHCI controllers work ONLY with the driver version 9.6.

Could this be the case? (see here below)

Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) — Support for 4k sector disks

RAID:
If your system has a supported RAID controller, follow these steps to install the operating system on a 4k sector disk:
Download the latest driver files below.
Use the Load Driver method to load the driver during operating system install.
AHCI:
If your system has a supported AHCI controller, you do not need to load the Intel® RST driver during the operating system. If you choose to manually load the driver, load Intel® RST version 9.6.

Attached is also my latest CBS log file.

Do you still see errors like last time or it seams normal now?

Hi rakatoa!
I'm glad you got this working. You are correct, the newest IRST driver is not needed for your hardware. Do not worry about updating the driver, as you will most likely not need to do it again due to the age of the hardware you are using. It seems that you have found the latest IRST driver that supports your PC and that is good enough!

I will let tom take over on the .CBS file as he was helping with that previously. But for the most part all looks good!

Hi Ganjeii,
Thanks a lot for your reply and comments. There are very valuable.

Hope Tom can find some time and look at the CBS file that I close this issue.

Best regards,
Rakatoa
