Thanking you in advance for any help and assistance.

Windows Update hasn't received any new updates since October 2016. The same 12-13 recommended and 5 optional updates have been listed there for months. Using guidance in other forums, I put WU setting to "never" and put WU at Services to "manual and stop" (it would not allow me to disable it). I saw that KB3020369 was installed 10/16/16. I downloaded and installed KB3172605 July Rollup, Nov 2016 Security Only Rollup KB3197868, Dec 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup KB3207752 from the MS Catalog. After restarting WU service and checking for updates, I then downloaded and installed , .NET Framework KB3205402 and Malicious Software Removal tool KB890830 as these were the only "current" ones showing. At this point, the WU home page no longer reflected that should receive updates for MS software, and neither is there an option on the settings page to tick the "give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update" - because it is no longer listed there.

Concerned because I hadn't received updates since 8/10/16 for MS Office Suites 2007 and MS Office Starter 2010, at the MS Catalog, I downloaded and installed Dec Security Updates for MS Office Suites 2007 KB3128020 and KB2883033 from the MS Catalog, and 34 individual updates are now showing in Installed Updates. But nothing has changed on the WU home page or in settings to indicate that this MS software is installed on this laptop.

I ran Hotfix KB947821 SURT; it said it fixed but nothing changed.

I ran Tweaking Repairs All in One; PreScan said all OK. Went to safe mode. Check disk said OK. System File Checker said no integrity violations. At Repairs, I unchecked all but Repair Windows Update. Restarted. Nothing changed except now of course the history in "view update history" has been cleared.

I tried to upload the CBS file but it's 81.6 MB so I'll use the other upload tool.

Over several days, I have twice uploaded the 90.4 MB CBS file to the File Upload Manager and still is not reflected as an uploaded file to manage nor as an attachment.

Hi there Jackie,

Please attempt to install one of the updates that are offered in Windows Update, then when it completes, copy the CBS.log file from C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ to your Desktop, then right click on it and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) folder.
Once the zip has been created, upload it to a file sharing service such as OneDrive, DropBox, SendSpace, etc. and include the link here with your reply.

I downloaded and installed KB3184143 which was a recommended update. Then I copied the CBS file to the desktop, zipped it, and uploaded to OneDrive.
Here is the link: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgqSc1AZsDUegWvENBvplIRjFspR.

I'd have replied earlier but there was no notification in email that you'd posted to this thread.

Thanks for your assistance.

Please try the following:

Purge Restore Points
  • Download Delfix from here.
  • Open the program and check only "Purge system restore" and "Create registry backup".
  • Click Run.
Note: The program will run for a few moments and then notepad will open with a log. Please paste the log in your next reply.

Very good. Please try checking for available updates with Windows Update, then pick one from the list and attempt to install it.

Once the update installation completes, zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log with your reply.

View attachment 24107

Windows checked for updates (searched about 3-4 minutes then stopped) but nothing changed, no new updates offered - it still showed the same 12 important and 5 optional updates available that have been there since late September. I downloaded and installed KB3179573 (August 16, 2016) and restarted.

Attached is the CBS log for today.

I see a lot of errors like the following:

Code:
2017-01-05 13:24:28, Info CBS Failed to get session package state for package: Package_1_for_KB2894844~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1 [HRESULT = 0x80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND]

Please attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log

Then may I ask what will show us where the problem is when I've received no updates via Windows Update since September - and - when I downloaded and installed Updates from the MS Catalog in December, the WU home was altered and no longer reflects that I should still be receiving updates for MS Office Starter 2010 and MS Office 2007 Suite?

Just like vev46 at https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...date-kb3110329-windows-7x64-2.html#post173625, this forum was recommended to me by the folks at Bleeping Computer. It's been 4 days since zcomputerwiz posted to this thread.

I am (apparently) able to install updates from the WU home and also when I download them from the Microsoft Catalog, but 1) WU home no longer recognizes that I should receive Office 2007 Suites updates (it says I receive updates for Windows only - it should read as before: "for Windows and other products from Microsoft Update" 2) no updates have been received at WU home since 10/16/16, and 3) when I click on "check for updates" now, it runs for about 30 seconds and then says "no important updates are available".

Is any further assistance available?

Thank you.

I would like to try resetting the Windows Update components with the Windows All-In-One repair tool again, if possible.

Run Windows Repairs
  1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
  2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
    Extract.JPG
  3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
  4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
  5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.
    Capture.JPG

  6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
  7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
  8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
  9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
  10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:

    17 - Repair Windows Updates

  11. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.
    StartRepairsWithReboot.JPG
  12. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

As noted in post #1, I did the Tweaking AIO repair 12/26. ("I ran Tweaking Repairs All in One; PreScan said all OK. Went to safe mode. Check disk said OK. System File Checker said no integrity violations. At Repairs, I unchecked all but Repair Windows Update. Restarted. Nothing changed except now of course the history in "view update history" has been cleared.")

Should I do it again?

If I may ask please, where on C Drive is the registry backup Tweaking made on 12/26 and the registry backup Delfix made 1/4/17?

Yes, please do - once it is complete and Windows has restarted, open Windows Update and check for new updates.
The first check will take a very long time, it may be best to let it run overnight. Once the check has completed, zip and attach C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log with your reply.

OK.

First may I have your opinion on something that was suggested at BleepingComputer, but I haven't had the guts to modify the registry. A BC member posted the following and said it had worked for him. He'd gotten it from a sevenforums thread, not showing office updates thru windows update for office 2010 win7 Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums. He wrote:

"Above post,halfway down page

1-Close all running Microsoft Office components.
2-Open Regedit
3-Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\General
4-Modify the "ShownOptIn" value from 1 to 0
5-Launch a Microsoft Office component, it will give you the option to download the updates, make sure you select it.
6-Done. If you go back to "Windows Update", then "Change Settings", you will see the "Microsoft Update" and "Software notifications" sections are available again (until the Microsoft Update check box is unchecked again)."

I've been hesitant to try this since I've always been told to never modify the registry, and I don't know how to restore to the backup if I needed to. I've looked and my value at this key is 1. Maybe try this first?

Yes, that should be a safe registry value to change.

Do note that if you are using Office 2010, the key should be
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\General
The value should be
Code:
ShownFirstRunOptIn

Actually it is the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\General on my machine. On this laptop, I only used Office Starter 2010 - never paid for / activated the full Office 2010 suite. When Office Starter stopped working and I couldn't open 3 years of documents (and not being aware of better options at the time), I installed MS Office 2007 Suite. I'd bought this CD & used it on an XP and had one installation left. It's worked well and WU home had been alerting to updates for many months...until September. At HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\General in my registry, there's just default and firstruntime.

Moving on, I changed the value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\General from 1 to 0 and restarted. Nothing has changed. I checked for Updates, nothing changed. It's not surprising.

Looking back at notes made in December while following guidelines at BC, I see that after I downloaded and installed KB3207752 December 2016 Security Quality Monthly Rollup with no problems, restarted, and went to WU home to see if any new updates had been received, there were two updates which had not previously been there: KB3205402 December Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, and 4.6.2 updates for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 and KB890830 Mal Software Tool. I downloaded and installed these two with no apparent problem, restarted, and it was at that point that WU home no longer reflected that I received updates for MS software. KB3205402 is NOT listed in Installed Updates however. There was no notice /popup saying the installation did not succeed. Could it be hung up somewhere?
