Windows Update alternates between giving an error and just 'stuck' on the download (I have left it running for 12 hours!! but was still got stuck at 5%)

I have run the Windows Update Troubleshooter which reports a Fix but to no avail.

I have run sfc /scannow - first time thru it reported errors that could only be fixed on a reboot. Update still failed.
Second time sfc was run it reported unfixable errors.

I have run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth which reported reparable errors BUT
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth reported a source file missing (I can't now remember the exact message)

I have tried

  1. net stop wuauserv
  2. net stop bits
  3. net stop cryptsvc
  4. ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old
  5. ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
  6. clean boot state (8.1) services & startup
  7. restart
  8. windows update - it still failed

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Please do the following (even if you have done it previously as I need fresh logs).

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thank you. I have the info I need from this log. Please do the following now (even though you have done previously).

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Just in case you meant dism.txt I have included that too.

BTW -my intention is - eventually - to upgrade to Windows 10 but I think the update that I'm 'stuck' on is for the upgrade.

I will try this as soon as I have access to a writeable CD. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help.

You don't need a writable CD. You can simply download the Media Creation Tool to your desktop and run it. It will download and upgrade your system automatically.
